Vehicle Detail

Very well preserved and maintained original all stock 1961 Mercury Comet 2 door with 71,400 miles. Picture 15 shows the only rust I was able to find, apparently 'dealt with' at the time of the car's one respray, but not altogether successfully. Use the Ebay zoom feature for closer examination. Underside is clean, with distinct seams and no rust beyond surface level. This car was a garage kept "Baby", with all maintenance kept up, and obviously driven very little. Scratches to the original wheel paint are from a set of full wheel covers, which are included. The bottle caps on the car are 'correct'. Since the rims need to be cleaned up anyway, there is also an aerosol can in the same dark blue color as the roof , included. Might look good. Whether or not you are a Comet fan, I can say that this car is money well spent because of it's low miles and complete originality. Most of the anticipated expenses of an old car have already been addressed. New fuel/vacuum pump, belts, hoses, lubricants, filters, tune up parts, brakes, and tires. Note that this is not a restored car - this is it's original condition, and the things that go bad over 54 years have been replaced. Everything works. Everything. And everything feels like a 1961 car should. Doors thunk. Windows roll smoothly. Engine idles quietly. There are no alarming noises, no loose parts, no squeaks and rattles. 170 cubic inch straight six with automatic transmission. All accessories - brakes, steering, windows - are manual. It is popular wherever it goes, and doesn't depreciate at all. More pictures, a driving description, and a detailed account of imperfections will be added. If there's a specific camera shot that will help in your evaluation, just ask. Thanks for Looking! Dan LarsonOn Aug-16-15 at 13:22:40 PDT, seller added the following information: 8/16/15 - I have added pictures of paint and body defects to emphasize that this car is not being represented as a flawless show winner. Any of the issues shown in pictures 17-19 can also be seen in the full car pictures; I'm just pointing them out. Now when I say there's a crease over the LR tire, a ding on the left headlight brow, a crease on the passenger door, paint loss on the trunk lid, faded roof paint, scratches on the RR quarter behind the wheel, rough chrome on the front bumper, a 5" split on the top of the drivers seat, and small stone chips on the windshield, you can magnify individually without losing sight of the whole - it still looks great. Now for the mechanical - I stated that the car has new brakes, and it does have new shoes and wheel cylinders. The master cylinder, however, looks original, or at least old. No leaks, works fine, just not new. There is a hesitation on acceleration that points to an inoperative accelerator pump. Car tracks, steers, and stops straight. Turning radius is large - no U-turns without a tugboat. I didn't go over 55, but the car drove, shifted, steered and stopped normally for a car it's age. It lacks ABS, airbags, engine control modules, and sensors of any sort. No seat belts, either - never had any. VIN as taken from the LF underhood brace is 1K11U829688. Included in auction, but not shown, are a new full size shop manual, original sales literature, and the owners glove box manual. Thanks Again! DanOn Aug-21-15 at 13:57:52 PDT, seller added the following information: 8/21/15 Maybe a little late to add this, but in the interest of a fair auction I will refuse bids from anyone with less than 10 feedback. It's easy to drive up the price and win if you don't have any follow through planned. I suspect that kind of bidder doesn't read down this far anyway. I will police my own auction, blocking bids from the unqualified, while appreciating the bids from those who do understand exactly what's going on. Thanks! Dan
