Vehicle Detail
Up for auction is this COMPLETELY UNMOLESTED SURVIVOR, 84,372 ORIGINAL MILEAGE, ABSOLUTELY PRISTINE 1969 Grand Prix Model J with its ORIGINAL 428 engine! This is truly a one-of-a-kind pampered vehicle and drives just like a new car! Great care has been taken by the two previous owners to maintain and protect the originality and condition of this PRISTINE 1969 Grand Prix. 1969 was the only year the Limelight Green exterior paint and the Gold vinyl/cloth interior were offered on the Grand Prix. If you’re a purist and have been looking for a COMPLETELY UNMOLESTED SURVIVOR and RARE 1969 Grand Prix with the 428 engine option, then this is the one you’ve been looking for! Remember: A car is only original ONCE! This ORIGINAL SURVIVOR 1969 Grand Prix is PHS verified. Here is the history and specifics on the car: This 1969 Grand Prix was delivered to Edd Rogers Chevrolet Sales in Sparta, TN (per the PHS build sheet) in March, 1969. This PRISTINE SURVIVOR 1969 Grand Prix has never seen snow or salt, as evidenced by the near-perfect original body panels. The couple that purchased the car brand new back in March, 1969, lovingly cared for the car until 2012 when they sold it to a gentleman in Ohio. I bought the car from him in April of this year. (I have the contact info on the previous owner). THE EXTERIOR: There is no rust anywhere on any of the original body panels on this car. All body panels are straight and true. The original chrome bumpers are near mint as is all of the original chrome trim. The original chrome front grilles are flawless. A new, correct license plate pocket on the rear bumper was added by the previous owner. The original Code H Limelight Green paint is still in great condition. There is no spider webbing or cracks anywhere. The only thing present is some fading which is to be expected for original paint that is almost 50 years old. I’ve buffed the paint several times and have brought back much of the original luster. Overall, the paint has a nice even patina and nice shine. Any small paint chips here and there have been touched up with the correct Dr. ColorChip Limelight Green paint (the bottle of paint come with the car). The original Code 9 Dark Green vinyl top is beginning to show its age. There is some minor peeling on the roof in a few places and a small section below the window that has peeled away. Other than that and a bit of fading, the original vinyl top is hanging in there! There are no rust or bubble issues anywhere under the original vinyl top. This car appears to have never been prone to the leakage issues below the windows – a testament to the fact this car has always been garage kept. A NOS pre-made Dark Green vinyl top from SMS Interiors comes with the car in case you want to change it out at some point. It should be noted that Dark Green was a common vinyl top color on Pontiac cars in the late 60’s and early 70’s. But the green color varied depending on the year. Rest assured, the NOS top included with the sale of this car is the CORRECT Dark Green color for 1969! All Soft Ray glass is original and in perfect shape. All of the original weatherstripping and seals are in near perfect shape. The original T3 Power Beam headlights work perfectly. The original taillights look new and work perfectly. The original 14x7 ‘JJ’ Rally II wheels are in very good condition . They have never been refinished. The original trim rings are in very good condition as well. A lucky find was a set of four NOS black center caps! They are on the car. The originals come with the car and are packed in the original GM boxes that the NOS ones came in. A new set of 5/8” single whitewall radials sit on the Rally II wheels. The thickness of this whitewall is the closet I could find to the correct-for-1969 3/8” single whitewall. I wanted to put a set of correct G78-14 bias ply tires on the car, but there are no repops with a 3/8” single whitewall. The only repops available with the 3/8” whitewall are the dual whitewall bias ply tires, but they are not correct, as they didn’t debut until the 1970 model year. So, why spend the money if the bias ply tires are not correct! THE INTERIOR: EVERYTHING in the Code 72 Gold vinyl/cloth interior is original to the car and is in pristine condition – the package tray, the vinyl/cloth seats, the head liner, the rear seat side panels, the front door panels, the front floor mats, the carpet, the AM/FM ‘red dot’ radio, the clock, all gauges, dash, console, etc. The pics simply don’t do the interior gold color and condition justice! The condition of the cloth and vinyl on the seats is spectacular and the gold color is nearly perfect! Again this is a testament to a lifelong garage-kept car. All interior lights work perfectly, as do all the gauges and the key buzzer. The only item not working in the interior is the original clock. Even the cigarette lighter works! The driver’s seat cover was recovered by the previous owner in the correct vinyl and cloth fabric (from SMS Interiors). The passenger seat is still in near-perfect condition. Enough vinyl and cloth fabric (leftover from redoing the driver’s seat) come with the car in case you ever want to change it out at some point. The rear seat is near perfect with the exception of some slight fading on the very top of the seat. Again, this is minor, but it it’s an issue for you, enough fabric to replace this one panel section comes with the car. All of the original seat belts are pristine. The front door panels are pristine with perfect color. The ORIGINAL Gold vinyl/cloth interior is TRULY PRISTINE, as the pics show. It should be noted that, like the Limelight Green exterior paint, the Gold vinyl/cloth interior was only offered on the Grand Prix in 1969. The Gold interior was offered in 1970 on the Grand Prix, but only in cloth. (As a side note, SMS Interiors is the literally the only source left in the US where you can find NOS correct vinyl and cloth). Again, let me state how the pics simply don’t do the near-perfect gold color of the seats and brown color of the carpet justice. This interior is simply one of the nicest original interiors left on the planet! THE TRUNK: The spare tire (correct G78-14 Goodyear Polyglas bias ply) and jack system are completely intact and in excellent condition. The top portion of the original trunk liner is intact and near perfect, but the ‘bed’ part of the original liner is missing. An Ames reproduction Pontiac vinyl mat rests on top of the area where the original bed liner was. These reproduction Pontiac vinyl mats are the correct size and pattern, but they come only in black. The original Pontiac vinyl trunk mats were gray, and nearly impossible to find. I prefer the look of the Pontiac heavy duty vinyl mat on the trunk bed (even though the black color is not correct) to the cheesy cloth reproductions. I think it looks much better in the trunk than the cheesy cloth repop. The original jack decal is still present under the deck lid and is beginning to fade a bit, but still looks good. The original rear speakers (working perfectly) and covers are still present. The original cardboard side panels are present. The left side is pristine. The right one is scuffed up a bit from something laying or resting on it at some point(??). The entire trunk area is extremely clean , as the pics show. There obviously have never been any roof leaks into the trunk in this car, as evidenced by the clean wheel wells – another testament to a garage- kept car. The ‘residue’ you see in the pics on the bottom of the wheel wells is glue from the original bed liner. It’s also interesting to note that the upper original liner is ‘crooked’. This was the way it was installed. As you know, back in the day, some of these ‘attention to details’ were not a priority. That is part of the appeal of these cars! THE ENGINE BAY: The original XF code 428 4 barrel engine runs and starts perfectly. It has never been rebuilt. The original Turbo Hydramatic transmission shifts and works perfectly. The engine bay still retains its original battery tray and holddown clamp, alternator, radiator and shroud, wiring, heater core, Quadrajet carburetor, manifolds, AC compressor and linkage, and heavy duty air cleaner. The following correct-for-the-year reproduction items have been added: AC Delco black sparkplug wires, tower clamps, date coded GM belts, correct radiator hoses with markings, and battery cables. The original windshield washer motor and squirters are working perfectly. The engine oil was recently changed as was the oil filter. The transmission has been serviced recently and the radiator has been flushed and filled. A new AC Delco Professional battery was recently installed for fresh and reliable starts. A huge folder of maintenance records for services performed over the years come with the car. The engine bay has been cleaned and detailed to resemble its original factory look when it first rolled into the dealer showroom in March, 1969. I elected not to repaint the engine block or any of the satin black areas (wheel wells, frame, etc.), again to keep this survivor totally original. A quart of the correct-for-1969 Eastwood turqoise engine paint comes with the car in case you want to paint the block. The AC compressor works fine and still holds R12, but the system won’t blow cold. We believe there is a clog in the original POA valve. We elected not to change out the POA valve, because there are no correct repops for 1969. I haven’t been able to locate a NOS one. I’m not willing to change out the originality of the POA valve just so the system blows cold. Keeping the whole system original was more important to me. Again, I apologize for any ‘light reflections’ in the pics caused by the sunlight. I’ve included a few different engine shots to try and capture as much detail as I could. THE UNDERCARRIAGE: The underside of the car is very clean. The car still retains its original rear end. A new set of AC Delco shocks have been added recently – while the brand is correct, they are not the correct ‘spirals’, as these are no longer repopped for the Grand Prix. A correct Gardner 'concours' exhaust system in the correct factory pattern (right down to the resonators!) was installed by the previous owner. I’ve included a pic of the underside of the car. The car rides and drives like a dream! All suspension parts are in excellent original condition. This ORIGINAL SURVIVOR 1969 Grand Prix Model J with the RARE 428 engine option comes with extensive documentation - owner’s manual, warranty leaflet/card, 1969 Tennessee license plate, a thick folder of receipts, and PHS documents. This may be one of the only remaining PRISTINE SURVIVOR 1969 Grand Prix’s still in existence. It drives like a dream – just like a new car! If you’re a purist, then you’ll be hard-pressed to find another ORIGINAL SURVIVOR and PRISTINE 1969 Grand Prix with the RARE 428 engine option as nice as this one. Great care has been taken by the two previous owners to protect the originality of this beautiful 1969 Grand Prix. Because of the PRISTINE condition and the fact that this car is a SURVIVOR and comes with the 428 engine option, this is a truly an INVESTMENT GRADE 1969 Grand Prix. Remember: a car is only original once! I’ve tried my best to give a complete and accurate description of this beautiful 1969 Grand Prix, because if you’re like me, you hate it when sellers deliberately give vague info on their cars and take all their pics from 20 feet away to hide all the defects in an attempt to get more for their car! You won’t find that here! That’s why I give a complete, accurate and thorough description of this car. Check out the high resolution pics. I have many shots of the car. If there’s a particular shot you want to see and it’s not in the ad, let me know and I can email it to you. This one is the real deal! Don’t let this one get away! This may be one of the only pristine SURVIVOR 1969 Grand Prix’s left! CHECK MY FEEDBACK AND BID WITH CONFIDENCE! Lastly, the reason I’m selling this beautiful 1969 Grand Prix is I’ve decided to get out of the hobby for awhile. My wife and I want to buy a bigger house, so I need to raise cash for the down payment. So the car must go! I had been waiting for a pristine survivor 1969 Grand Prix with a 428 engine to come available for years. When I bought her, I had intended to keep her for a long time!
