The title and registration process and associated costs will be the responsibility of the buyer. We provide airport pick up from GSO at no charge. 3. Deposit and final paymentA deposit of $500 is required within 24 hours of sale. Payment in full is required before a sold vehicle can be released. Vehicles can be paid for in cash, by certified funds, by personal check, once cleared, and by loan check. Auto Focus must be notified within 36 hours of sale as to how the vehicle will be paid for. An important note about the deposit: We try very hard to accurately represent our vehicles. If you are the winning bidder, or agree to purchase a vehicle and are dissatisfied with the condition of the vehicle once you arrive, we will return your deposit. 1971 VW Westfalia Camper - with elevating roof.
Current condition:
Exterior: Solid body, very little rust, exterior reconditioned 2 years ago including new paint all over, new front windshield seal, pop-top refinished, new tent canvas. Exterior is nearly complete & original with the only modification being the new red & white paint scheme. There are a few imperfections including a scratch on the passenger side, some rust bubbles reappearing on the driver side rocker panel.
Interior: Complete and in original style & layout. The front seats have been recovered. The upholstery in the rear has been replaced with leather. The curtains have been redone in Sunbrella fabric. The audio system is modern.
Engine: 1.6L upright. Runs strong. Built locally about a year ago. Features twin Weber carbs, alternator upgrade, vacuum advance distributor. Oil was changed recently, checked over, valves adjusted etc. here in preparation for sale. There is a small oil leak that cannot be fixed. This is typical for upright VW engines.
Brakes, suspension, tires: brakes are safe, adjusted and in good shape. Suspension also safe and fairly tight. Tires are correct LT rated – Hancook RA08 195R14C with very few miles.
Our shop has been maintaining this bus. It is roadworthy and in good condition all around.
Some history:
Originally from the Pacific Northwest, this bus migrated to the South at around 100k miles. The second owner put another 90k on it in Georgia and North Florida. Owner number 3 was actually me (James here at Auto Focus) I bought it over the phone. The bus was still really original and I liked both it and the seller. I think they were selling it because they wanted a car with a/c. And having grown up in North Florida I could relate! I really bought the bus for a friend. He trailered it from Florida and once we got it all up to speed for use here in NC, enjoyed it for a year or so, updated the interior and then passed it to another friend - who also enjoyed it, reconditioned the exterior but is now enjoying a Vanagon Westfalia. We all made it a little better and the great looking bus you see today.
For folks not as familiar with these vehicles, the 1971 model has a significant one year only feature - it is the only model year bus offered here in the US that is equipped with the combination of the smaller 1.6L upright engine, and disc front brakes with vented wheels. While it looks a lot like a '70 and a lot like a '72, the '71 can easily be identified. The advantage here is an obvious improvement in safety and convenience over the earlier models combined with the traditional VW engine. You can't be in a hurry when driving a bus, especially a 1.6 bus, but these vehicles are dependable and relatively easy & inexpensive to keep up as they are fairly simple.
When this bus arrived in NC, it was very solid and still mostly in original paint and all original inside. It ran and drove but needed brake work. With this completed the van was roadworthy of over the next few months it received some good upfits including new curtains (Sunbrella) and all new leather upholstery in the rear, plus new front seat covers. Luckily the front door panels were still in great shape and most of the Westfalia interior was still intact. Replacing some of the birch paneling would really finish off the interior. Eventually the old engine just gave up. It had pushed this bus a very long way. The current engine was built locally and is nicely set up with twin Weber carbs, vacuum advance distributor and alternator upgrade. Originally Pastel White all over, the new (about 2 years old) red & white paint scheme really makes this bus stand out. The front windshield seal and tent canvas were replaced during this makeover. All other seals were still tight and intact. Overall, this is a solid example. It is straight and not rusty. Please review all of the photos. Note that there is a minor scratch on the passenger side just in front of the rear wheel. The front floor on the passenger side is in good shape. The front floor on the driver side has developed some rust that may eventually need to be dealt with. This is not uncommon and the replacement panel is available. Otherwise, there really isn't much to do on this bus other than enjoy it. Sure, there are plenty of things you can do to keep improving it and personalizing, but not much that has to be done.
This bus still has some of the neat original items that are often missing such as the owner’s manual, camper supplement, front & top child's hammocks, rear screen and the camp stool. It is a better than average example. We will gladly answer any questions and provide any details needed. This bus has a clear NC title in the current owner’s name. We are authorized to sell it on consignment and will be completing the transfer paperwork.

1. NC residents
In addition to the sale price, North Carolina residents are also responsible for: NC Highway Use Tax which is 3% of the vehicle's sale price; License and title fee of $73.00; Auto Focus documentation fee of $250. NC residents must have a valid NC drivers license and must have at least liability insurance coverage on the purchased vehicle before it can leave the Auto Focus lot. Auto Focus will complete all title work for NC residents.
2. Out of state buyers
All buyers who take personal delivery, and drive their vehicle from the Auto Focus lot must have at least liability coverage insurance on the vehicle purachased as this is a requirement in NC. The title and registration process and associated costs will be the responsibility of the buyer. We provide airport pick up from GSO at no charge.
3. Deposit and final payment
A deposit of $500 is required within 24 hours of sale. Payment in full is required before a sold vehicle can be released. Vehicles can be paid for in cash, by certified funds, by personal check, once cleared, and by loan check. Auto Focus must be notified within 36 hours of sale as to how the vehicle will be paid for. An important note about the deposit: We try very hard to accurately represent our vehicles. If you are the winning bidder, or agree to purchase a vehicle and are dissatisfied with the condition of the vehicle once you arrive, we will return your deposit. If you simply change your mind, or fail to even come look at the vehicle you have agreed to buy, your $500 deposit will not be refunded.
4. Shipping
Shipping cost and arrangements are the responsibility of the buyer.
5. Warranty
All vehicles sold by Auto Focus have been inspected and serviced by Foreign Accents, a Bosch Service Center in Greensboro, NC. All vehicles have a current NC inspection unless otherwise noted.
Vehicles sold by Auto Focus are sold AS-IS with no warranty unless there is factory warranty coverage remaining.
