Unrestored Original 1935 Packard Senior Series 1200 “Standard Eight,” Five Passenger Touring Sedan. CCCA/ACCA Classic During the 1920’s and 1930’s, Packard was the leading luxury car manufacturer in the United States, and very possibly, in the world. Packard cars were engineered, and were built using a great deal of hand labor. They were rugged, luxurious, and beautifully detailed cars. The depression in the early 1930’s forced the company to look to volume production in the mid-price market. The hired manufacturing talent from General Motors and in 1935 introduced the new “120” series to compete with Buick, LaSalle, Hudson and other medium priced marques. The profits from the “120” series permitted the company to continue making their elegant, limited production Standard Eight, Super Eight, and Twelve models (referred to as the “Senior” series cars). The styling of the Senior series Packards were modernized significantly for 1935, including skirted pontoon fenders, and streamlined headlights, taillights, and swept back, “aerodynamic” bodywork. Mechanically, these cards included features that are rarely seen even today…adjustable shock absorbers, thermostatically controlled radiator louvers, automatic chassis lubrications systems, full gauges including a crankcase oil level gauge. Packard used “straight-eight”, and V12 engines, which ere beautifully designed, smooth, powerful and rugged. The Series 200, “Standard Eight” was built on a 127 inch wheelbase and offered with a five-passenger touring sedan body made by Packard. The engine is an “L-head” straight eight producing about 100 horsepower. The transmission is a three speed manual, with synchromesh on second, and third. The brakes are power assisted mechanical. There were about 4000 “Standard Eight” cars made in 1935, with over half of these being the Series 1200 Touring Sedan. Gee Brothers-Wylie Motor Co. In Memphis, Tennessee sold this car new on 9-9-35. The original owner, or his heirs, kept the car well into the 1950’s. The next owner purchased the car in Nashville, Tennessee in 1979. This car has never been driven on salted roads and is in extremely good condition. The car is equipped with optional bumper guards, trunk rack, Trippe lights, hot water heater, wheel discs, and white sidewall tires. The interior is upholstered in the original English wool broadcloth. Cosmetically, the car is original paint although has been touched up where chips have occurred over the years. The sheet metal is excellent owing to the fact that is has never seen salt or winters , always been garaged and NO rust,(not even surface rust) the underside still looks like it rolled off the factory floor anywhere. The chrome is original however bumpers and grille should be replated for show. The original interior is most intact, and while serviceable, it is in need of restoration. The car has the accessory wheel discs for the option of wire or covered wheel Mechanically, the care has been extensively restored (over $15000 in receipts). The engine is very quiet, runs smooth and has been completely overhauled with cylinder sleeves, new bearings, valves, pistons, and rings. The crankshaft was built up and turned down to the original specifications (it was sent to California for this service), the radiator has a new core, the generator has been re-wound, the distributor has been restored, as has the carburetor, the transmission has been rebuilt with new bearing and synchronizers, The clutch has been replaced, the gas tank has been sealed and painted, an eclectic fuel pump has been fitted, the wiring harness has been replaced, turn indicators have been fitted and a new stainless steel exhaust system has been installed. The wheels have been stripped ad refinished, the steering gearbox has been overhauled, and the steering column and steering wheel restored, new king pins and spring shackle pins have been installed. The car runs and drives beautifully and is very road worthy.
