Amazing Rare Opportunity - 1968 Porsche 912 Targa More pictures at http://webs.saratogamenus.com/912 Contact me if you want higher resolution photos. This car is a solid driver and an excellent candidate for a complete restoration, or just drive it and have fun. With the way these cars are sky-rocketing in value, you couldn't go wrong either way. I have owned this car since 2005. It was originally Bahama Yellow (great color) but was painted white years ago (I don't know why anyone would make that color change). The paint job was not very good. This is an extremely rare model (only 2,562 made) but without the hassles of an extremely rare model because there are plenty of 911 Targas (body and mechanical parts) and 912s with 616 engines (engine parts). GOOD 1968 was the last year of the Short Wheel Base (SWB) 912s. Targa Top is in very good condition and secures very well. Documented Targa top rebuild by Dan Petchel (well respected Targa top rebuilder - do a search on Pelican and/or the 912BBS). Targa top fits nicely into the front trunk without having to fold it (I think this may be unique to SWBs?). Transmission - 5 speed 901 transmission. Documented transmission rebuild by Gary Fairbanks (well respected transmission rebuilder - do a search on Pelican and/or the 912BBS). Interior - 5 gauge 911 instrumentation. New dashboard with no cracks. New carpet by previous owner in good condition. Door Panels are in decent shape for a 46 year old car. (Map pocket missing from passenger side door.) Durant Mirror Wheels - Fuchs alloys. New Goodyear Eagle GTs (195/65R15). H4 Headlamps, with good chrome around them. Bursch exhaust – sounds great Weber carburetors with K/N Air Filters Undocumented engine rebuild by a New Hampshire 356 engine builder by previous owner (around 2004). Carburetors tuned summer of 2013 by my mechanic (I met him through our local PCA chapter - he retired from Langan Porsche in Albany, where he was factory trained in the 70s. He only works on Porsches as a hobby-job). Front camber strut brace Brakes - Caliper rebuild by Goldline Brakes in Seattle (well respected caliper rebuilder - do a search on Pelican and/or the 912BBS). New stainless steel brake lines, rotors (Summer 2011). New front pads in Summer 2013. BAD Paint job is not good Needs spring plate bushings Clutch needs new throw out bearing – works fine, but makes a rubbing noise Temperature can run high sometimes (~250° if the temperature gauge is correct) – mechanic says this is due to incomplete engine insulation allowing heat to enter into engine compartment from exhaust When engine is at operating temperature it can idle around 1,800 to 2,000 RPM, probably needs distributor rebuild Generator bulb glows dimly sometimes – can only notice it at night Pedal cluster is in good condition, but clutch needs new return spring – clutch doesn’t go back for about the last ½ inch Minor hot start problem – hasn’t been that big of a deal to me so I haven’t addressed it yet Aftermarket seats – small cigarette burn on driver’s seat No spare wheel and tire Glove box doesn’t click shut, front dash tin not fastened Right rear lens cracked I removed aftermarket stereo installed by previous owner – I left the speaker wires and antenna wire intact Leaks a little oil from the sump plate area – from the stud nuts fastening the sump plate Missing front stone plate guard Some pitting on chrome Needs back seat cushions No sun visors Clock doesn't work Pedal cluster floor board missing Trunk hood shock doesn’t hold the hood up – need to brace with a piece of wood Washer jets don’t work OTHER GT Grant Steering Wheel - I would rather have a stock Porsche wheel. Hard Window Targa - This car is a hard window targa. I've seen posts on Pelican and the 912BBS about converting hard window targas to soft window targas. I like the hard window targas better. Car Underside - The car's underside seems solid to me. The floor pans are good. The rust in the pictures (see website link above) appear superficial and metal seems solid. Documented extensive floor, rocker, frame welding repairs in 1992.
