Vehicle Detail

Willys 463-2WD Wagon This Wagon is a 1949 model that was manufactured in February 1950. It was one of the very last of the Wagons to be manufactured with the 4cyl flathead L-143 (GoDevil) engine. In April 1950, the overhead valued engine was introduced to the Willys along with body modifications. This Wagon is one of the most original, running 1949’s that I am aware of. There are a couple of fully restored or barn find 463’s that are more complete but both hard use and frequent modifications make original Willys Wagons fairly rare. Videos of this Wagon are available on YouTube. Search for "Ammobates". I will be happy to photograph any details that you would like to see. The overall condition is good. This would be an excellent starter for someone interested in a full restoration. I hope someone will want to keep this rare vehicle in original condition. The body is in good condition with rust on the common spots on the doors (replacement panels are available) and some small surface rust spots elsewhere. There are a few dents but no major body damage. A previous owner did an amateur paint job and it has some garage rash from my years (9) years of owning it. The paint pattern is correct but the colors are not for a 1949. The top / hood brown is correct but the side colors are for a later model. It should be repainted. There is a small amount of filler under the passenger floor but the remainder of the body is all original metal (to my knowledge). Chrome is original but pitted / rusty and all should be rechromed. The engine is not original but correct. Someone had replaced the original with a 1945 Jeep engine. I located a correct L-143, it was professionally rebuilt, and has 600 miles since I installed it. The engine was running very well and the Wagon has been driven routinely around town. I retained the original 6 volt system. Oil bath air filter and dual horn are original and were optional factory items in 1949. I had a problem with a leaky expansion plug ( noticed quickly and I do not believe the engine overheated) but now the engine is difficult to start. It will start and run if pushed but not with starter. I do not have time to determine exactly what is wrong (points, condenser, etc replaced) so I have significantly reduced my minimum selling price and the vehicle is being sold with the engine AS IS. The entire clutch assembly was replaced with the new engine. The transmission works perfectly. The Wagon is equipped with the original Warner Electric Overdrive. The overdrive also works perfectly. I did however convert it to a manual switch. All of the original overdrive parts remain with the Wagon so that it could be reconnected to work automatically. The rest of the drivetrain is solid with no known issues. The tires are old and serviceable but need replacing The interior is good. The wooden floor runners are the appropriate wide type. I replaced the steering wheel. Backseats appear to have original coverings, fronts have been recovered. Headliner is unique but obviously not original. Replacements for the original cardboard headliners are readily available. Armrests are present but need recovering. All switches / gauges (speedo, oil pressure, temperature, Amps) work except for the fuel gauge. Most glass is good except for wing windows and rollup windows. Heater works.
