Vehicle Detail

1979 Pontiac TransAm With a record 117,108 produced for 1979, by the late 1970s everyone from Burt Reynolds to Sammy Hagar and John Travolta wanted a Trans Am, not to mention the rest of us regular people. The Trans Am enjoyed a carefully cultivated image as an iconic American performance car. It was a throwback to a simpler time. Though it received styling updates to keep it fresh front and rear, the overall body design, the quivering shaker hood, spoilers everywhere (that actually worked!), handling rivaling the much more expensive Corvette and graphics that announced its arrival from a block away, brought back memories of the early 1970s when Trans Ams were looked upon with awe for their appearance and matching performance. All of these character traits were reinforced by Hollywood movies--Smokey and the Bandit in 1977 and Hooper in 1978, to name two. The first was arguably more responsible for selling Trans Ams of this era than any Pontiac ad campaign. The car offered here has been in a local Southern California collection for more than a decade. Powered by Pontiac’s 301 cu in (4.9 L) V8, mated to the GM Turbo Hydra-Matic 350 three-speed automatic, the car runs exceptionally well with strong and responsive power. It starts perfectly, idles and shifts through the gears in perfect working order. The owner, a meticulous collector or cars and motorcycles, bought this as a bit of easy fun. He was insistent on the options list to include T-tops, power windows, power door locks, and A/C. It also has the 15 x 7 cast-aluminum wheels with great tires; tilt steering wheel; and controlled wipers. All systems work perfectly, and a nice after-market Apline stereo system has been installed. Although there was nothing wrong with the paint, it lacked the fresh look. So, the car was treated to a quality repaint in Dodge Viper red. Paint quality is still excellent with great lustre and depth of shine. The interior, which I believe is original, is in great condition with excellent dash, seat and panel surfaces. The car was updated with a sport suspension set up. The car corners like it’s on rails. It is truly about the best handling American car from that era I have driven. It hugs the road, turns in well, and corners completely flat. It is quite an inspiring drive. I intended to just take it around the block at first, but ended up on a 90 minute test drive in the country lanes of Malibu – I was having the best time! The meticulous owner has kept this car in a climate-controlled garage, regularly serviced, maintained and detailed. All of his vehicles had to be “ready to go” and the quality of that care is reflected in the obvious quality of this car. It will not disappoint. The car is accompanied by two sets of keys, a clean, clear California title and two substantial files of receipts and service records – too many to fit in a single file!
