The Suburban was introduced in 1946 as a 1947 model and was only produced for two years (1947 and 1948). Considered very rare today, only 7500 were produced. Estimates (inclusive of information from clubs, etc.) states that only 10 drivable cars are in existence today. What made the Suburban unusual was its configuration and long length. She was placed on, essentially, a limousine body – and held 9 passengers. Naturally, this was an attractive configuration if you were, say – a prominent hotel that collected your guests from a local train station. On the roof of every Suburban was a roof rack that covered the entire roof – and it’s occupant’s luggage. The car is huge inside with beautiful wood interior – on the doors and trunk flooring. She is quite charming. The rear doors are “suicide” doors and are very large – making ingress/egress easy. This car was originally purchased in May of 1948 by Mr. Charles W. Thorpe of Fairfield, Ct. It was later sold to the Mt. Washington Hotel in Mt. Washington, New Hampshire. The car has 78,000 original miles and runs extremely well. The interior was redone four or so years ago and looks outstanding. The wood appears to also have been redone. Again, the wood looks great and the two tone paint combination really sets the car off. The 1948 Desoto Suburban cost $2,631 new. Her 6 cylinder engine produced a whopping 109hp. She also has the Desoto semi-automotic transmission – which operates as is was intended, and the car produces respectable torque, despite her curb weight of 3974 lbs. She is a pleasure to drive. The interior fabric, etc. looks great too. The interior is a great environment. The exterior has been repainted but it’s not current. The paint is acceptable –looks fine for local cars shows but is, as we like to say, a 20 footer. The car does have new brakes and new radials. The chrome is original too – meaning there is mild pitting – but nothing too serious. She is perfectly fine to be left as is and enjoy. Especially is you have a large family or – a lot of friends. We bought the car less than a year ago with the intention of repainting her and showing her at local shows. However, our 1936 Lincoln V12 LeBaron roadster is taking too much time and too much money (the engine alone cost $20k to restore and we haven’t talked the wood “buck” of the car. Therefore, I need to sell her – sadly, as it is one of the favorite cars for guests that visit the collection. This car is undervalued given how rare she is and I believe that there will be a large upside for the future owner. As she is an old car – she is being sold “as-is”, where is. We will assist with shipping worldwide, but there is no warranty implied or expressed. We encourage inspections – and test-drives prior to purchase. We do the best we can to describe the car – but your definition of excellent may be different from mine (as an example). We will also gladly take additional pictures of the car. We have a lift at the collection for any inspection you might require. Good luck.
