Vehicle Detail
Talk about a time capsule! Stored for 44 years and with only 77,000 miles! Here's a piece of American history and an automotive milestone just waiting to be turned into somebody's gem. There were 74,122 of these 1948 Jeeps made according to the Willys Jeep Production Figures & Serial Numbers. How many unrestored originals remain, I don't know. But here's one crying out for someone to turn it into the masterpiece it deserves to be. This 48 Willys Jeep 4X4 four-cylinder is a barn-fresh find ready for the Jeep enthusiast who can make it all his own. This had been used for a short time in a small Pa. business, then put away. I discovered it and figured this would be exactly what a "Jeep person" would be looking for. It was last inspected in Jan. 1970 and, again, has been stored for an amazing 44 years! I've left everything as-is, including the inspection sticker on the window. Surprisingly, the gauges appear to work fine, although I didn't put enough gas in the tank to actually check the gas gauge. It needs a full overhaul to turn it into what you want it to be, but it does run strong and is being sold as found. The very strong engine turns over and runs like a clock. There's a crack running thru one of two front window panels, as found. These babies were built solid. They're known for durability. In fact, that's why the U. S. government adopted the Jeep for the war effort. This Jeep also comes with a hard top, a real bonus because hard tops are very valuable and difficult to find. This represents a solid investment because it'll only increase in value. Much better than money in the bank and a way to enjoy your hard-earned dollars...and let's face it, the banks aren't paying much interest on money nowadays so you might as well enjoy it. There's just something special about Jeeps. The war effort scoffed up the early 1940s-era Jeeps and when they were offered to the public, the demand was great right from the start. The bottom line is this: you just don't come across an unmolested 1940s Jeep like this. It's a chance to turn it into what you want it to be. And don't forget it's an economical 4-cylinder! The vehicle is located near Lehighton, Pa., where it was found. Local delivery is possible. I had in mind to take this Jeep and sell it at the upcoming Annual Redball Military Transport Rally & Swap Meet at Gilbert, Pa. in September. But why wait? I figured I'd list it here first to see if someone wants to grab it while it's fresh and get a headstart. For more info, call Denny at 570 778-5348. After a Depression-era bankruptcy reorganization, the company became Willys-Overland Motors, Inc. in 1936. The ability to literally drive across any terrain suddenly became a necessity for the military during the onset of World War II. Over 135 companies had been invited to submit their vehicle design, but only three did, the Ford Motor Company, the American Bantam company and Willys-Overland. An initial contract for seventy jeeps was given to the Bantam company, though their model was a failure once tested by the military. The second World War had begun, and more prototypes were accepted from the other two companies. Deciding that Willys-Overland had the best model, they were chosen. Beginning their vehicle development with the design and manufacture of America's first four-wheel drive ΒΌ-ton utility vehicle, Willys-Overland Motors, Inc stepped up to the challenge. After the second World War, they realized that soon there would be a large market for a civilian version of the Jeep with returned servicemen. Willys-Overland had already begun to promote the versatility of the Jeep vehicle as both a work and recreational vehicle as early as 1942, but at the time, all efforts had been allocated to supplying the armed services. More than 350,000 Jeeps were manufactured during the 1940's. Purchasing the jeeps at $738.74 per model., the Military supported Willy's model. A vehicle that proved to be both dependable as well as rugged, by the end of the war, the Jeep had already reached acclaim. Thanks for checking out this Jeep!
