The cool thing about this good looking sedan is the fact that it provides the very best of BMW's world-renowned performance characteristics. The fantastic thing about this good looking sedan is the fact that you can get all that dynamic driving ability at a price point which screams value. Covered in a clean coat of Nachtblau Pearl, which appears to have been babied and protected since new, this awesome 5 Series wears what some enthusiasts believe is the best looking sheetmetal BMW has ever produced. And presently, the car shows tasteful enough to appeal to a broad range of buyers, yet edgy enough to hold its own in the eyes of roundel-loving enthusiasts. While the E39 is considered one of the most attractive BMW's ever created, its design aesthetic is rather conservative. But that's not a bad thing. At the front of the car, a pinched valence centers traditional 'kidney grilles' between dynamic headlights, standard fog lamps and a wide air intake. Behind those grilles, a sculpted hood flows toward chip-free glass that's flanked by body-matched mirrors and a factory-supplied sunroof. Below that glass, sculpted rocker sills complement small, color-keyed door handles and clean, Euro-spec marker lamps. And at the back of the car, factory fresh tail lights frame a second BMW propeller emblem, a chrome "540i" badge and a stylish, blemish-free bumper. In 1999 most people got by with BMW's 2.8 liter inline 6-cylinder. For those that needed more power under their right foot, the top of the line 5-series meant the inclusion of a 4.4 liter, 282 horsepower DOHC V8. Pop this car's hood and you'll see an engine bay that's been stuffed with the aforementioned V8. In reality the mill measures just over 268 cubic inches, but, thanks in part to BMW valve and intake covers, it has the appearance of a slammed big block. Better still: this 540i is capable of a 0-60 time of 6.2 seconds and can achieve a top speed of 155 MPH. As with most BMW's, the underside of this vehicle is just as impressive as the rest of the car. The 540i features front and rear independent suspension, and bolted to the 4.4L is a GM-sourced 5-speed automatic transmission. Stopping power comes courtesy of 4-wheel ventilated discs, which are equipped with standard ABS. And the sport package also meant the inclusion of 17-inch alloy rims, which have been wrapped in Dunlop tread. Sure BMW's feature power, but their luxurious interior is what keeps people coming back for more. This 540i features a Gray leather interior that displays hardly any signs of wear. Naturally, that color scheme incorporates plenty of black and wood grain. Both front seats have a multi-adjustable power feature that allows for the passengers to find the ideal comfort setting. In front of the shifter, dual climate control rides under a hideaway CD player. In front of the driver, a black leather steering wheel spins around a familiar instrument cluster. And behind the cockpit, a spacious trunk is perfect for travel. BMWs have always served as poster cars for major technological advancements, gradually becoming status symbol for a whole demographic of owners.
