E55/AMG badges mean serious hardware and menacing tone from quad outlets promises instant humiliation for those willing to risk provoking this bad boy. Air conditioner blows cold and the Harman-Kardon sound system can rattle teeth fillings . . . This car has a power trunk lid, optional front and rear Parktronic and E55s have a high-strength steel rear axle carrier, verses aluminum on a regular E-class. AMGs are expensive and comparatively rare but even 11 years later, this E55 is still among the fastest sport sedans ever made. The price of entry may be lofty but buying new or even near new, you would have to spend upwards of several tens of thousands more to come anywhere near this kind of performance . . . The E55 is something of a sleeper and I disagree with many who believe that for all the extra performance and high price, the car should look substantially different than a regular E-class. I think the few badges, subtle squat and threatening tailpipes make a perfect understatement. After living with it a week I can also tell you, this car absolutely does not go unnoticed by the European go-fast crowd. M6s, S5s, some kind of R-Jag, two C6 Corvettes, a Camaro SS convertible and an angry fellow in an SRT Charger either wanted a piece of me or came up hard from behind and then backed off. It's fun to assume the latter happens upon seeing the rear deck emblems and surprisingly, the only actual "race" happened briefly with a young man in a 2.0 liter A5 coupe, of all things. My adolescent urges usually prevail under such circumstances and a 258 horsepower differential (me = 469 him = 211) didn't seem to matter to this guy. No need to floor it, and I let him get the jump on me so that there was no doubt he was asking for all the speed his sleek Audi could muster. Stayed even with his bumper a couple of seconds to confirm the brief hope of victory touched his expression before stepping on it up to the throttle detent. One-thousand-one, one-thousand-two, one-thousand three and he's smaller than a dime in my rear view mirror . . . -Foy I've lived with this AMG for a week and while I never get used to an underpowered car, I'm surprised how quickly 469 ponies has come to feel quite normal. Truth is, waking up to 516 ft-lbs. of torque each morning never gets old and that much grunt, available over such a broad rpm range, is an experience that stays with you. Getting on the freeway my first time behind the wheel, I got on it a little at about 60 mph. I hadn't yet floored it; like almost every Mercedes I remember driving, there's a detent at the end of pedal travel that you must deliberately push through to summon full whack. Even so, the back of the car danced ever so slightly to the left before the traction control light began flashing. First E55 lesson: ⅞ throttle up to 60 (at least) breaks the rear end loose. A day before Doug put me in this rocket, he sent me home in a 2005 SL55 AMG we had just acquired. Both cars have basically the same engine (SL55 has 24 more hp with exact same torque) and I was surprised to learn the SL weighs more and in fact, Car and Driver says the 5-passenger E55 actually outruns the 2-seater! In addition to superb documented service and near showroom condition, here are a few other points to ponder: an '03 E55 is just 0.3 second slower to 60 mph than a same year Ferrari 575M Maranello F1 and a half second quicker than the V12 Ferrari from 50 to 70; it is also only 0.3 second and 1 mph slower through the quarter than an '03 Z06. Dragonslayer acceleration in a roomy 4-door with every conceivable amenity that looks and operates like it just rolled off the lot.
