Vehicle Detail

This exact car was featured in "The Corvair Decade" book (1980) by Tony Fiory. I planned to make this a reliable, year-round daily driver, so I put a lot of effort into predicting what might go wrong and fixing everything first, so I put a lot of work into it to make it a reliable one, but now I need to sell it.It runs, drives, shifts, and stops great. With the engine in the rear, it steers easily like it has power steering, and accelerates quickly. It has a clean Illinois title. The Good Stuff I installed a 1966 110hp engine with all new gaskets, seals, and Viton seals, new clutch and resurfaced flywheel, and Pertronix electronic ignition. I rebuilt the heads and rebuilt both carbs. The engine does NOT leak (and yes, there is oil in it!). The engine was pulled from a barn find 1966 with 36,000 original miles on it. I added finned aluminum valve covers and I had the gasket surfaces machined for a perfect, leak-free fit. I replaced the wiring harness from the dash to the engine compartment and installed a new parking brake cable. I installed accessory Stewart-Warner gauges for oil pressure, oil temperature, and a voltmeter. All of the original gauges (speedometer, fuel, etc) work, too, but the dummy lights have been disconnected. The radio does not work, but it may be a simple fuse issue. The dash lights, dome light, horn, turn signals, headlights and tail lights all work. I ran the wires for a tachometer, but I haven't connected them. If you “Buy It Now”, I’ll throw in a chrome bullet tachometer, mount it, and attach all the wiring for you. I added a new voltage regulator to go with the alternator conversion. I installed 4 new skinny whitewall tires, new shocks, new U-joints, and a new battery. All chassis and suspension joints have been greased. I ran all new fuel lines and new fuel filters. The gas tank has given me no indication of rust problems (clean fuel filter), but I’m including a very clean spare tank with the sale. I installed a new dual Master Cylinder for more reliable braking, and then added all new brake parts (wheel cylinders, shoes, hardware, etc) and re-surfaced drums. Everything works very well. I added new fresh air/heater ducting and seals, and firewall seals. The heater blower works (but the switch does not). Doors close with a nice "thunk"! I rebuilt the reverse light switch, but the reverse lights don’t work. I’m not sure why. The switch may simply need to be replaced. I installed a dual exhaust system and added Harley-Davidson Sportster XL chrome-plated mufflers and flared chrome exhaust tips. That means most of the exhaust system is chrome. The mufflers are rated at 85dB and are only slightly louder than the original exhaust system that came with the car. They give the car a nice glasspack sound at idle that mellows out even further as you drive. I’ve included a video. Some photos show the old and some the new exhaust. I am also including in the sale a rust-free front clip (dash to headlights) of a 1960 Corvair complete with the entire gas heater system. I had this hauled up from Texas a few years ago for patch panels. The heater alone is worth about $300. It includes headlights & trim, but not all side trim, bumper, hood or tank. I also have a very nice spare hood/engine cover, a nice spare windshield, and a nice spare gas tank, plus the usual complement of gobs and gobs of spare parts I have the original hubcaps, but right now it's sporting chrome bullet lug nuts. The mileage listed is not exact, but I can get it for you if you want.I have a video of the car being driven down the street and going through the 4 forward gears with the Harley mufflers. Unfortunately, eBay won't allow me to include it here. Please send me a message if you're a serious buyer and want to see proof of the car running and driving. Additional photos are also available upon request. The bad stuff The windshield has some chips in it, and the gasket is dry and cracked, so it leaks a little BUT I’m including a very nice, scratch and chip-free windshield, and changing the windshield and gasket is easy. The trunk has some rust, but the 1960 clip can replace the entire 1963 clip, or could be used for patch panels. There may be some rust bubbling up behind the front wheel, but again, the spare front clip could be used for patches (or replace the whole thing) if that became an issue. There is some rust right in front of the rear wheels that will need to be patched sooner or later, but good patch panels are available from several Corvair after-market suppliers. Finally, the floors were rusty, but a previous owner cut them out and riveted new metal in their place. With the carpet installed you can’t tell, and the doors still close with a nice thunk, so there is no issue with a sagging body. I don’t see any signs of rust in the rockers. The interior is in good shape, but there are some tears in the driver’s seat and in the headliner. The door panels are warped. The good news is that all of these are available new (and inexpensive) from the aftermarket. Installation is easy, or I can recommend a local and affordable upholstery guy that could do the installation for you. I can also recommend a local mechanic that ONLY works on Corvairs if you needed help further down the line. I can help arrange car hauling should you need it. I require a non-refundable $500 deposit at the end of the auction and the rest before the car leaves my property. Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE
