Vehicle Detail
This auction ends at roughly 7pm Mountain Time on Sunday, May 11th (Mother’s Day!) This is a sweetheart of a car/truck - a 1969 Chevrolet El Camino with a V8 engine, automatic transmission, power steering, and bucket seats. This is a fun, easy-to-drive classic car that is reliable and ready for anything. Interior - The interior of this car is extremely clean and in very nice condition. The seats are leather with cloth center inserts, both sides are power-adjustable, and both have power lumbar and bolster adjustments. Factory GM seatbelts are clean and operate properly. The headliner is new and professionally installed. The dashboard houses a vintage Blaupunkt AM/FM/Cassette radio (the antenna is embedded into the windshield and there are two small speakers mounted in the custom panel on the rear cab wall). The tilt steering column and wheel are from a ’79 Hurst Oldsmobile, as is the center console with a his/hers shifter. It was installed properly, with the linkage connected to the steering column so you can’t take it out of park unless the key is on (and can’t remove the key unless the transmission is in park). The carpet is of very high quality and is perfectly clean, laid over new noise and heat insulation. Sound dampening material was added to the rear cab wall as well. All gauges, dash lights, etc are working correctly. The dome light works when either door is opened. The windows roll up and down easily, and the heater controls work smoothly. Exterior - The exterior of the car is also in exceptionally nice condition. All body and paint work has been professionally done to a high standard (car completely stripped, glass removed, doorjambs nicely finished, etc). The paint is very smooth and shiny, and the color is “black currant pearl”. As you can see in the photos, it often looks black, but sunlight makes it absolutely glow with a deep maroon/purple color. Nearly all of the trim work, emblems, bezels, lenses, etc have been replaced with new. I do have a new bow tie badge for the center of the grill, just didn’t want to drill holes to install it - it will be included with the car. The bumpers are originals (not thin aftermarket reproductions) that were rechromed - they look amazing. All of the glass is in good condition, and all weatherstripping has been replaced. The underside of the car is solid - I can’t find any rust in the floors, fenders, quarter panels, rocker panels, etc. Mechanical - This car starts easily, runs smoothly, shifts well, and drives down the road nicely. The engine is a rebuilt 350 V8 that is mostly stock, strong, and well-maintained. It has a new 3-core radiator and a 7-blade clutch fan. The car always runs cool - I’ve never seen it over 190, even when stuck at a light on a warm day. An aluminum Moroso air cleaner sits atop a Carter AFB carburetor mounted to an aluminum Edelbrock intake manifold. A Mallory dual-point distributor and Mallory 8mm spark plug wires have been added to ensure reliability. A remote oil filter setup has been installed to provide additional filtering and easy access for oil changes. The headers are connected to a dual exhaust system with a crossover pipe and Dynomax Super Turbo mufflers (sounds throaty, yet refined). The transmission is a 3 speed automatic (TH350) which shifts nicely. The suspension has been completely rebuilt with all new bushings, ball joints, tie rod ends, and new Moog coil springs front and rear. The only deviations from stock are a larger front swaybar and a quick-ratio steering box from a 1979 Hurst Olds. The raised-white-letter Remington tires have excellent tread and are mounted on 15x8 American Racing Torq Thrust II wheels with nice chrome lugs. The entire braking system was replaced/rebuilt from front to rear, and operates properly - no pulling to one side, no noises, no leaks, etc. The rear axle has a 3.08 gear ratio, which allows for pleasant highway cruising with decent fuel economy. Flaws - I have been told I’m often too critical, but here are the things I’d want to know if I were buying this car. Please don’t get the wrong impression from this paragraph - this is a very nice car, as you can see from the photos below (which were taken only a few days ago, so they are current and accurate). I simply don’t want the new owner to have any surprises or disappointments. The paint has a few (only a few) rock chips and also some cracking near the top of the drivers door. When the tank is full, the fuel gauge reads way over the full mark, but begins to operate properly from 3/4 tank down to empty. The reverse lights work with a switch, not automatically. There is no windshield washer reservoir. The tilt column is loose. There is a bit of wind noise from the passenger side wing window - it doesn’t seem to close tightly. These are all relatively minor or easily addressed issues, but I felt they should be disclosed up front. Air Conditioning - The previous owner started to install air conditioning. There is no compressor, compressor mounting brackets, belt, lines, or condenser. The heater controls and heater box are from a Chevelle station wagon and should really cool the small El Camino cabin efficiently. I do have (and will include) the receiver/dryer and expansion valve, new in the box. The evaporator has been capped and kept clean, it should be ready for use. The radiator was purchased with future a/c use in mind, and will certainly handle the extra heat. Overall - This car is a great driver. It has good power. The steering is crisp and responsive. The ride is pleasant, not too stiff nor too soft. All of the lights work. The turn signals cancel themselves properly. The exhaust sounds great. The car runs, drives, and stops exactly like it should. Many, many parts were replaced when the car was restored… things like a new wiper motor, new heater blower motor, the list goes on. It has a spare tire, jack, and lug wrench. Power steering and an automatic transmission make it easy for anyone to drive. Included - Clear Colorado title, large stack of receipts from the restoration (well over $12k worth), original owner’s manual, a workshop manual, wiring diagrams, Blaupunkt radio manual, the emblem and trim strip for the center bar of the grill, air conditioning parts, and a tuning kit and manual for the carburetor. If you have any questions, please ask them prior to placing your bid. If you are local, or know someone who is, please consider coming to see the car in person.
