Vehicle Detail
You are bidding on a very original classic silver 1978 Mercedes convertible 450SL. 1978 is the last year that is considered a 'classic' by Hagerty Insurance since it was the last year with the cast-iron engine block. I have never paid more than $150/year with their outstanding full-replacement coverage. This car has never left California. You will find no rust on the car. The car has 163,440 careful miles on it. I am the second owner and have kept it garaged for the past 18 years. It has been regularly maintained. The car tracks perfectly while driving down the road and has dramatic power upon acceleration. The silver paint is extremely nice with almost no wear marks except for a could of small dings and scratches that do not detract except under close scrutiny. As it has been garaged its entire life with me there is no paint fading. The paint retains its glossy appearance throughout. The upholstery is in great condition although I have had matching blue sheepskin seat covers due to their considerable comfort. The soft top is original with a consistent deep blue color and completely translucent clear vinyl windows. All gauges work including the clock. The odometer reads correctly. The cruise control works as well now as the day I got it, which is to say, perfectly! The power windows operate smoothly albeit slower than today's vehicles. All interior lights are operational, the blinkers, flashers, and all exterior lights work as well. AC blows not as cold as I would like it but since I live in a coastal climate, it has never been an issue. It could probably use a recharge. When not in use, the hardtop has its own storage space. When you install it, you will see it fits like a glove. The vehicle has all the original Mercedes booklets and service records. There is a complete tool kit and first aid kit as well. Overall, the interior is in good shape with decent carpets although there is a crack in the dashboard. The arm rest has a support underneath that needs a stop. I upgraded the original Mercedes wheels with a set of new painted ones that are less than a year old. The spare tire and jack are included. I would have no worries about taking this car on long trips. It will make any long distance trip and is a blast to drive. The only concern I have on road trips is it is SO easy to go over the speed limit! Feel free to email any questions you may have. I am only selling it to make room in my garage for a newer vehicle. Happy bidding!
