Vehicle Detail
2013 Triumph Thruxton Special The Thruxton is born of the café racer culture that dominated motorcycling in the 1960s. Used to race from one café to another, the street racing specials featured extensive modifications such as dropped bars, single seats and upswept exhausts. Triumph introduced the Thruxton in honor of those racers, taking their hugely successful Bonneville to a whole new level of modified special. The 865cc parallel twin puts out a healthy 69PS with 69Nm of torque at its peak, with plenty available at low revs so you get most use out of it. Fuelling is controlled by a sophisticated computer programmed management system for clean emissions and a smooth, predictable throttle response. Fitted with 41mm forks and chromed adjustable rear shocks the Thruxton offers far better handling over the Bonneville stablemate. The trail was reduced to 97mm for sharper steering and more urgent handling when ridden hard. Brakes: up front is a big 320mm single disc strong enough to match the sporting pedigree of the Thruxton with plenty of feedback to enhance your ride. Yet we've made it as unobtrusive as possible within the 1960s styling. The wheels are wirespoked with lightweight aluminium alloy rims, 18 inches at the front and 17 inches rear for the classic café racer look. But the modifications just aren’t enough. Enter the bike offered here. It was purchased brand new only a few months ago by a university professor, bent on making the Thruxton Triumph should have made. He set about adding, subtracting and modifying the look and feel of the Thruxton, further enhancing the café racer mantra. Starting with the hugely expensive belt-drive modification. This offers excellent power delivery and is just about maintenance free. It will need adjustment in 7500 miles! And the adjustment tool is included in the sale. Next came the exhaust. A lighter more sporting exhaust system was installed and the electronics adjusted accordingly, tailoring the mapping to suit the pipes. An oil pressure gauge was installed with an oil temperature gauge. The bike was then fitted with folding aluminium rearsets with drilled aluminium ankle plates, while the passenger pegs were removed and the unsightly mounting holes were covered appropriately with expensive block off plates. The bulky standard lighting set up was then addressed with a Lucas-style unit to the rear with chromed metal shorty indicators front and rear. And then, of course, bar-end mirrors were fitted in place of the large chrome standard items. The tank was treated to the stylish and retro knee pads, and a center stand was added. For protection, LSL and Evotech frame sliders were fitted. Now, having purchased the bike, paid sales tax and license fees and performing all the modifications at considerable cost and with an engineer’s precision, the owner took it for a spin and scared the daylights out of himself. The increase in power from the exhaust modification and the saved weight from the aftermarket parts offers a marked difference in performance over the standard bike. And so with only 136 miles on the clock, he traded it with me for a classic BMW. The bike is offered in showroom condition. That just about says it all. AND ALL THE ORIGINAL PARTS ACCOMPANY THE BIKE!!! So if you want to put any part of it back to standard… The bike is also accompanied by all keys, tools, books, paperwork to accompany the modifications, and a clean clear title. The bike carries California registration until September, 2014.
