Vehicle Detail

I’m a car guy…I just love them. So, crazy as it may sound, I actually purchased two vintage cars last month. I had been bugging a friend to sell me his car, and when he didn’t, I found this one. Of course, as soon as I took delivery on this sweet little 2002 Tii, my buddy advised me he was ready to sell me his ’73 911T! Go figure. Well unfortunately, only one of the new purchases can fit in the garage…I’m already keeping my company car outside. So as much as I hate to let this fun little time capsule go, my wife advises me I just can’t justify keeping two more toys! LOTS MORE PICTURES AT https://www.icloud.com/photostream/#A6Grq0zwGIuCxD This 1973 BMW 2002 Tii was delivered factory new to New York before making its way to California, where it’s been ever since the very early 80’s. It didn’t make its way back to the East Coast until this Thanksgiving, when it arrived safely via “Inner-City” enclosed transport in the Virginia Beach area. Prior to receiving the car on November 24th, the car was Pre-Purchase Inspected (PPI’d) by EURO-TECH in Mission Viejo, CA. The following PPI repair recommendations were made: Leaking oil return line from the fuel injection pump...replace oil return lineNeeded a new center drive shaft support bearing...replaceSteering box beginning to leak past seal...remove gearbox and replace seals I took the car to a BMW specialty shop in Virginia Beach for these repairs in December, so this 2002 Tii is ready to drive! While there, I had them address a few more things than what the PPI found…including the following: Replaced the molded oil return line from the fuel injection pump. Leak resolved.Replaced the center drive shaft support bearing.Replaced steering box seals. Leak resolved.Replaced the Guibo (drive shaft flex disk), convenient to replace at the same time as the center drive shaft support bearing.Replaced the transmission output shaft seal.Replaced the transmission shifter selector seal.Replaced the two rear exhaust hangers.Tightened front left wheel bearing.Remounted battery with new mounting bracket/hardware.The car runs great, and with everything I fix, I’m even more tempted to figure out a way to keep it. I just don’t have the room, or I would. The only addition I would make to the previous seller’s description below is that the paint appears to be somewhat spotted/oxidized on topside of the roof. While this car has a very solid body, if you’re looking for show quality paint, the roof is ok, but not show quality yet. There are also a couple of small places under the hood where the previous owner touched up with a brush. The spots on the roof are hard to see from 5 or more feet from the car or in direct sunlight, but it’s more apparent close up under fluorescent lighting. I would expect the paint on the roof will need a little attention…wet sand/buff or otherwise to give it the same shine as the front of the car, which has the most recent paintwork (previous seller replaced the front nose due to chips & such – see below). LOTS MORE PICTURES AT https://www.icloud.com/photostream/#A6Grq0zwGIuCxD What doesn’t work: Interior lights only come on by manually switching them on.Horn button not working.Original Becker radio present but not working.Hot/Cold work with moving vent air, but cabin fan no longer works.Speedometer works great, but odometer stopped working approximately 200 miles before I purchased. I’ve put another 120 miles on the car simply taking it back and forth to my local BMW specialty shop. Regardless, this already partially restored car can be thoroughly enjoyed as is, or easily fully restored to original condition. With its solid body, my original intent with this purchase was total restoration, especially since it has a solid body and all matching #’s (body, engine, etc.). As such, the car will also come with a number of other restoration goodies: BMW ’02 Restoration Guide (by Mike Macartney)BMW 2002 ti tii OEM Shop Manual 1972-1976 Repair Service 2 Book SetHaynes 18050 Automotive Repair ManualA complete new set of OEM factory stickers for doors and under-hood including E-codes, Paint Color, Emissions, Capacities, Air Pressures, Oil Service, Safety, Coolant, Fuses, Fuel Type, etc. – 16 total brand new factory body stickers.“Fast-Poke” magazine advertisement re-print, handy for car shows, Cars & Coffee and such.Color 2002/2002Tii Dealership Brochure I have the clear title from the previous owner, and I have not yet registered the car since receiving it last month. So the winner of this auction will become the 4th owner of this beloved model. The rest of this listing below is from the previous owner’s November listing. Copying/pasting this in saved me some time in re-listing. Best of luck, and happy bidding! FROM THE PREVIOUS OWNER (through Nov. 24, 2013): “This car was a daily driver, and covered in garage in Aliso Viejo CA when not being driven. Took it LA and back (120 miles) twice last week in traffic, no issues, runs cool and strong. Very fun to drive, fast, in great condition, recently rebuilt sunroof works perfectly, strong engine and solid body. Original with a few minor mods, partly restored, Clock keeps time, interior lights work with switch, has original spare tire and rim in great condition, original emblems, original radio, uncut door panels, new headliner, new carpet. I am third owner, car was in Malibu, CA most of it's life. Engine/mechanical: was rebuilt by second owner about 22,000 miles ago. It runs very strong with no smoke, at any speed or gear. The two BMW 2002 specialty shops that worked on it said it is one of the fastest Tii's they've ever driven, has great acceleration. I had the fuel injection rebuilt, added electronic ignition, is in good order. It handles great and steering and suspension work well. Brakes in good condition, stops evenly and solid, about 70% left. Transmission works great first through third gear. The 4th gear syncro is beginning to show its age…so it must be eased it into 4th. Since it doesn't affect normal driving or enjoying the car, I have not fixed it. I waited on this because I wanted to install a 5 speed. Also, a used orig. 4 speed transmission put in by a 2002 specialty shop is only about $500. Body: solid and repainted about 15 years ago. The sunroof was rebuilt about a year ago and works well. I recently had the front nose section of car replaced, as the original was a mess. A BMW 2002 specialty shop in L.A removed the nose tip off another good 73 2002, at the factory seams, and installed as original. The nose, hood, and front fenders were repainted to complete and looks very good. The only body rust which needed "fixed" was located under the spare tire by previous owner when he had it painted. This area did receive some body filler. Because its not noticeable and under the spare, I did not fix it. It poses no issues at all, but to replace with new spare tire tub estimate was about $500. There is also some minor body filler at the very bottom of the rocker panels. Last, the bumpers are original and starting to show their age. Front bumper still looks presentable, but rear is ready for re-chroming, chrome is flaking. I got a quote to re-chrome them, so one can expect to spend around $1000 to have these re-chromed. Interior: New carpet, new headliner, solid door panels with no holes, original Becker radio (does not work), heat/cold work but fan does not, all gauges work. Speedometer works fine, but the odometer stopped working about 200 miles ago and not sure what happened but likely to be the cable. The seats are good, no tears. Mechanic said fan will need replacement, as the original fan is rusted frozen. The spare tire tub and fan are common rust spots for 02's as moisture can collect there. The dashboard has a few cracks and I put the 'powered by BMW' badge on to cover a hole, where I removed a digital clock the 2nd owner had installed. Tires/Rims: New Kumho tires, very nice handling. The rims were sanded and repainted, clear coated, and look great. The spare tire and rim are original from the factory, untouched and still look excellent. The rims all straight except the left front has a very small curbing spot on the outer edge. The spare rim appears to have never been used and could be swapped if desired. Price: NADA shows the 73tii going price as $20.6k (avg) and $34.3k (high). Because it is a good driver in above average condition, with rare working sunroof, will start with a minimum and no reserve. Good luck! History: From the BMW group archive, Germany HQ, they confirmed the following regarding the VIN: "manufactured on November 17th, 1972 and delivered on November 20th, 1972 to the BMW importer Hoffman Motors Corp. in New York City. The original colour was Chamonix, paint code 085." The 2002 made it to CA in the early 80's with original owner. I purchased from 2nd owner, a famous architect, who had it in Malibu, CA for many years. I take it to work occasionally and weekend drives, stays in garage in Aliso Viejo CA, in south Orange County. BMW 2002tii vs 2002, from BMW 2002 archive: The biggest change for the 2002 series was the introduction of the 2002tii. The “fuelie” was much more expensive and much faster. It still is the standard of performance for the smaller BMWs. The tii has also survived in remarkable numbers since it is the true enthusiast’s car. The 2002tii had larger diameter wheel cylinders, larger and thicker front rotors and brake pads as well as a tastefully mounted clock on the dash. It also boasted virtually no emission controls, heavy duty front spindles, boxed rear A arms, heavier clutch and a 3.45:1 differential yielding a higher top end. In 1973 the plastic intake manifold trumpets were changed to more reliable aluminum ones which didn’t have any O-rings to blow out. Some small modifications were made to the injection pump linkage. In 1974 a new distributor was installed along with some other minor emission controls. Other than that the car remained parallel to the 2002. The 1974 2002tii was slower but this was primarily due to a difference in weight. The 1973 tii was the fastest and last of the round tail lights, as well as chrome bumpers.” LOTS MORE PICTURES AT https://www.icloud.com/photostream/#A6Grq0zwGIuCxD _________________________________________ Auction Terms: Please contact me with any questions by ebay email prior to bidding.
