Vehicle Detail
I am relisting because the winning bidder does not have the money to buy it. I am adding buy it now this time. Please only bid if you can pay for it. Thank you. I bought this car about 10 years ago and have barely used it. I have recently completed everything that I wanted to do to it and now I want to sell so I can get a truck. It has always been in the garage or under a tarp. I am starting the bid at $1,500 and will let the free market work with no reserve. There will be options for shipping and the buyer will take care of this expense. I reserve the right to end the auction at any time since it is for sale locally. I do not know of the history before I bought it. I will answer all questions about the car's condition and will post more pictures if requested. The car starts up with no problem and runs well. Here is more detail. Drive train It has a 1971 1600 cc engine that runs great. The engine number is AE466129. The clutch functions as expected, but it disengages kind of high. I have not tried adjusting and I have not noticed any slipping. The transmission works great. While moving, you can downshift in all gears except 1st. To shift into 1st, you need to stop the car. I have done tuneups and oil changes and that is it. It has the classic 4 speed manual transmission. I do not know how many miles are on the car. The odometer does not work. Suspension I have changed the shocks. I have not done any other work since it works. Breaks I have changed the master cylinder and wheel cylinders. Several brake lines were replaced also. It stops like a classic volkswagen with a good solid pedal. Body and Paint I recently repaired the body with several new body panels purchased from karmannghia.com. All rust was cut out and welded body panels were used for every section that required it. I did not use mesh or tape it is all welded panels or new steel. There will be several pictures of the underside of the car. The driver's side floor pan was replaced by a body shop and it looks good but they botched the heater channel. The passenger's side was patched by someone before me and was solid so I did not touch it. This will be shown in a pic also. Before installing the carpet, I painted the interior of the pans with POR-15. Unless you live in a very dry climate, you can expect these cars to rust some over time. I feel good about the work that was done and it should be fine for years to come. I did not strip this car to all metal before repairing. I am including a before pic of some welding work. I cleaned up all the spots and kept digging until I got good metal to weld to. I recently spray painted it. I used a gallon of primer and 3 quarters of rustoleum. Convertible top, Upholstery and carpet I bought the top from Convertible Specialties and it looks great. It was done about 6 years ago, and it is still tight. As I mentioned before, this car has always been in a garage. There is padding and the top has a white liner. The upholstery and carpet were bought as kits from karmannghia.com. Please check out the pictures. Somethings that don't work The clock, odometer, aftermarket radio, and horn do not work. The turn signals work intermittently when turned on. Also the cardboard thing that defines the trunk is missing. If you have any questions or want more pictures, just ask. Thank you for bidding. On Jul-22-13 at 05:32:08 PDT, seller added the following information: I have shown the car and received some emails and want to provide some more detail. 1) Since I have owned the car, it has never been a daily driver. I have been asked what it would take to make it a daily driver, and I don't know. If I started running it every day, I'm sure there would be a list of must fix items and want to fix items. It would be a mistake to expect years of trouble free service. Please keep in mind that it has not been professionally restored and it is 45 years old. 2) I was showing the car last night and we found that when you press down on the left front fender there is a squeak. It's not a metal on metal squeak, but more like a spring or shock. It bounces back up fine. It seems to me some lube would fix it up. I just thought I would mention it. Thanks for all the questions. On Jul-29-13 at 17:41:09 PDT, seller added the following information: The buy it now price is $4,200. I'm not sure why ebay hides it after the first bid. On Jul-30-13 at 21:01:42 PDT, seller added the following information: Notice: I did not properly understand how ebay works with "Buy it now". I have been informing bidders that you can enter the original "Buy it now" price of $4200 and that would end the bidding and you would win the auction. I have been informed by ebay "Buy it now" is no longer in effect after the initial bid. I have been on the phone with them twice to try to make it happen. I am very sorry for making this incorrect statement. Now, it is just an auction. I sincerely apologize.
