Vehicle Detail

This 1946 Chevrolet ½ ton is a two-owner classical pickup. It is registered as a historic vehicle in the state of Washington. HISTORY: Purchased in 1971 from a farm outside of Salem, Oregon, the process began in the mid-70’s to upgrade the pickup from an olive-drab green farm truck to a two-tone restored classic vehicle. The one exception to the upgrade was keeping the heavy-gauge steel, rear bumper designed for hauling farm equipment. The original 216 cu. in. engine was rebuilt in the 1980’s and then in 2009 that motor was replaced with a Chevy Power glide 235 cu. in. engine along with a new clutch and pressure plate. From 1975-77, the truck was taken down to the frame to inspect its condition, to install a new wiring harness, and to replace the older, original “friction shocks” with brackets for new Monroe air shocks. The pickup bed was rebuilt at that time and the body taken into a paint shop to be sanded, dents repaired, and prepped for a new paint job. The front bumper was re-chromed at that time as well. By 1979, the pickup was ready to be seen as a Vintage Chevrolet Car Club of America show vehicle and it was driven sparingly in VCCC outings and rallies. In 1982, the decision was made to convert the differential ring and pinion gear from the original 4.11 to 3.55 rear end to accommodate for more comfortable and fuel-efficient highway travel. In addition, a custom-fitted canopy for the truck bed was built to allow for regular weekend outings. For a decade, the ‘46 Chevy served as a weekend camper and it towed a Hobie Cat 16 to regional races in the PNW (photo included). This change in its use provided many great memories. From 1990-2008, it was mostly stored in a garage. In 2009 the plan was drafted to install a new motor and to restore the pickup to show condition as the original paint job of 30 years ago had faded and pealed. However, other events have now intervened with that idea and it’s clear it is time to pass along this special vehicle to another serious, caring owner. Today the truck is basically ready for some body work and re-painting but outside of that everything works- brakes, lights, drive train (new clutch/pressure plate), 235 motor, locks (door/glove box), windows and it still catches the eye of folks when seen on the road. There are (7-8) photos of front and side view, the new windshield (still in a box), and the custom canopy. Pictures reveal where the undercoating is exposed and a rear fender has had body work for re-painting. There are two old photos showing when the truck did not have a canopy and when it was use to tow a Hobie Cat 16. Highlights: For show purposes, this vehicle comes with four classical White Wall tires (Coker 6:50x16) already mounted on rims. (photo) These are tube-type tires and have excellent tread…essentially new condition. There are extra hub caps as well but they will need new paint. A new complete windshield has been purchased and includes metal frame, glass, and molding. It’s in the shipping box. Some Issues: This is a solid old classical truck with only some minor body work tasks if it is to be re-painted. The front chrome bumper has a dent, the driver’s rear view mirror needs to be replaced and the passenger window as well. A photo shows the location of the door rust.
