Vehicle Detail
Here is a great old 240D for the mechanically-minded tinkerer or enthusiast. This has been a very reliable daily driver for me commuting 80 miles, round-trip for over 3 years now, but has developed some sort of engine issue I'm not able to correct. The car started running a bit rough recently, and got progressively worse over the next couple of days. I adjusted the valve lashes, but that seemed to actually make it somewhat worse. That's about the extent of what I'm willing to tackle mechanically. It is running, but roughly (especially at idle), with some blue smoke (NOT white smoke!). The car basically did not smoke at all before, even when accelerating on to the freeway. Possibly fuel injectors or injector pump?? It may even be time for an engine rebuild. I'm just not enough of a mechanic to figure out exactly what the issue is, and frankly have lost patience with it. I really don't have the time or energy to mess around with old diesels now, and have bought a gasoline engine replacement car. This is the perfect project for you, the Mercedes diesel enthusiast. With your knowledge, skill, and enthusiasm, I'm sure you'll give this car another 30 years to go. This car will need to be towed to its new home, and although it does run (again, roughly), I'm really not sure if it could climb up on a transport without winch assist. A car dolly should be no problem, though. Transportation will of course, be up to you, but it needs to be gone within 2 weeks of the end of the auction. The body is almost completely rust free; this was a SoCal car. The only rust spot I'm aware of is a small dent under the trim on the left rear quarter panel (see photos 9 and 10). The transmission is smooth and positive. Vacuum works well as far as the powertrain goes, but I bypassed the door locks. There are the usual fluid drips, but that's what a drip pan is for! All 4 tires are Firestone Winterforce, the rear tires were new this past November. Original radio works well with good reception, tape deck does not work any more. The odometer only works occasionally now for about 2 1/2 years, estimated mileage is over 250,000, but obviously unknown. The A/C works if you give it a fresh charge of R134. Heat works well. New starter, good strong battery. Black with tan interior. $250 Paypal deposit is required within 24hrs of end of auction, Paypal, cash, or US Post Office money order payment in full within 7 days of end of auction and prior to title transfer or pickup of vehicle or keys. No checks of any kind, including cashier's checks.
