Vehicle Detail

1974 MGB Convertible One of the most engaging sportscars of all time, not based on value or even outright speed was the MGB, making it one of the most successful sports cars of the post-war era; the ever-popular and supremely easy to own MGB enjoyed an 18-year production life and worldwide sales in excess of 500,000 cars. Conceived in the late 1950s as the replacement for the MGA, the 'B' dispensed with its predecessor's separate chassis in favor of unit body construction. The existing B-series engine was stretched to 1,798cc, and the MGB's smooth, aerodynamically efficient lines made the most of the 95bhp available to achieve a top speed that just bested the magic 'ton'. The car on offer here, last year of the hugely desirable chrome bumper, is a well cared for example. Manufacured in May of 1974, it was subject to a full restoration some years ago, the car has held up very well indeed. Originally, an Arizona native, so a completely rust free car, it was an excellent base for restoration. The car was completely dismantled and gone through. $1600 worth of suspension upgrades include adjustable dynamic coil over shocks and a fast road kit up front, while the rear received a tube shock conversion and a one inch lowered rear leaf spring kit as well as all new bushings. The brakes were completely overhauled and work well. The engine has been rebuilt to include a no-lead head conversion and a Kent fast street cam and has approximately 5000 miles since restoration. This vehicle has new twin SU carburetors, alternator, distributor and a new fuel pump all in the last 3 or so years. It has a nice sporty exhaust with great raspy sound. The vehicle has a 4-speed transmission with fresh clutch and electric overdrive, which works flawlessly and offers lower RPM for cruising. The MGB has replica Minilite alloy rims with 185/14 radial tires. The result is a great driving ‘B’. The vehicle has never been in an accident, so the straight body with excellent panel fit was a great starting point for the restoration. The body has been finished in a base coat/clear coat in inimitable Tartan red. There are a couple of paint chips that have been touched up but hardly noticeable, and the only blemishes to the excellent paint. Chrome parts were all re-plated at restoration and excellent. The interior has been restored with tan seats, black leather dash and tan carpet, all in great condition. The vehicle has AM/FM radio with CD player with door speakers. The convertible top has been replaced during restoration and is in very good condition with a good clear rear window. The multiple trophy winner at local car shows, the MGB is a lovely, supremely driveable car and is easy to own and draws a crowd.
