Vehicle Detail
You are viewing our garage kept 1973 VW Tin Roof Westfalia. We are the second of two registered owners ever. She is now located in Southern California. Prior to her arrival here in San Diego she spent 38 years in the dry location of Santa Fe New Mexico and best of all she is "rust free". A true Barn Find, I acquired this Tin Roof through an estate sale while we were on vacation in Santa Fe looking for art and antiques for our home just about two years ago. Upon first inspection we found an all original Tin Roof Westfalia Camper in and out. Best of all it had zero rust anywhere! That’s right zero rust holes on the floors, dog legs (jack points), front nose, gutters or anywhere else. I have photos of the entire Westfalia upon our acquisition. The Tin Roof was still wearing her all original paint but the finish was very thin and I have photos available of her in her original state. The paint was so thin a buff would have taken more paint off. Only very minor repairs were required to take place including replacement of the dented bumpers for new ones with all new hardware. The rear bumper brackets were refinished in correct gray and all new hardware was used. The only body flaws were limited to a few very minor door dings that were repaired and then the body was blocked and prepped for paint. I have photos of the refinish process. To keep her original we avoided the temptation to make her a two tone paint scheme and we stuck with the original single color L90D paint code. We also replaced the front windshield along with a new one and gasket and installed other new gaskets including left and right rear quarter glass and tail gate window while the windows were out for the cosmetic refurbish. The result was a superior straight body with stunning paint that has a superior mirror finish! We painted the wheels in correct silver installed new headlights, new tail light lens covers and all side marker lamps. There are minor flaws that have occurred since the work was done. There is a tiny nick on top of the rear bumper about the size of the front edge of a pinky figure nail and a tiny pin size nick under the driver’s door. This Tin Roof has been used by us for parades and beach trips a stone’s throw from our home but most of the time she is seldom used and sits in our garage with my other cars. I simply want to disclose the flaws even though they are both very hard to spot and minor. The interior of our head turning Tin Roof is simply amazing for 40 years old. The front seats and door panels were about the only part of the entire interior that needed help. We installed new correct front seat covers with upgraded padding, replaced the front interior door panels with new ones and installed a new rubber floor mat. The durable original rear Westfalia Gold cloth cushions on the rear pad, z-bed and jump seat are in very good condition including the foam. They are all firm and free of sags or tears, there re minor spots but they should shampoo out with ease. All original Westfalia gear is in place including sink with running water and ice box, rear package shelf, Z bed, jump seat, fold up table and closet with mirror. Cabinets are all in very good condition with only minor imperfections. The original veneer headliner is in excellent condition and free of any noticeable flaws. The sun visors are in good shape too. All instruments work correctly including speedometer, odometer, gas gauge and warning lights. Interior lights including the rear camper light work correctly. She has never been smoked in and there are no signs of any tobacco products ever being used in her, simply zero funky odors! She is also equipped with her original rear bug screen and child’s cot. She has a near forty ear old Clarion am fm radio but we did not re install the old worn out speakers. She has seat belts for five and all belts are fully functional. The top floor surface under the rubber mat has minor surface ware but is solid as a rock! The interior is in amazing condition considering her age and she has aged very well. We also installed new custom curtains using fabric from Tommy Bahama. This addition makes this Tin roof Westy unique in her own way while turning heads everywhere we take her. Our head turning Volkswagen Westfalia Tin roof drives like a champ! She now has 79,421 miles and we believe they are correct based on the overall condition when we first acquired her in Santa Fe. In July of this year we noticed she was loosing power and we found her compression was low. We pulled her 1800 cc engine and had her completely rebuilt from top to bottom and all numbers are still matching. The engine has a transferable 12 month, 12,000 mile warranty. We also installed a new Sachs Clutch. The engine also has new belt, all new fuel lines and hoses. In October or just about two months ago we installed new front brake pads, new front brake hose kit, machined the front rotors, Replace all front to rear brake lines, installed new rear brake shoes, installed new rear wheel cylinder kit, installed new Zimmerman rear drums. We also installed new ignition switch and a new Interstate battery. All receipts will be provided to the buyer. She is equipped with four new matching 185/R14 radial tires with less than two hundred miles on them. Simply put our Westy is ready for just about anything. Our wonderful Tin Roof drives great down the highway and if your inclined to do so 75 plus is no problem. She likes to be warmed up in the morning for a few minutes but once under way at normal operating temp she simply sings. She has excellent performance on hills or long uphill grades. The suspension feels tight and drives correctly. The head lamps, back up lights, tail lights, brake lights and license plate light all work correctly. The turn signals and hazard warning light switch just failed and should be replaced. The transmission works perfectly in all gears and is tight and never sloppy and never pops out of any gear with perfect shifting operation assisted by the new Sachs clutch. The steering is tight, precise and free of play. She drives down the road in a straight line at any speed and never pulls to any side and when its time to stop she does it on a dime thanks to the entire new front and rear brakes. If your familiar with the grade on Interstate 8 headed east from San Diego out to Alpine she cruises effortlessly up that big long grade from sea level to 3000 feet at 70 MPH, Overall she drives like a champion.
