They were only imported in 1973 and 1974 and sales were quite low. The VW Thing uses the same engine as the VW Beetle, Karmann Ghia, and Bus, and the same chassis as the Bug and Ghia (although the Thing has a higher ground clearence and "beefier" suspension). These vehicles are two wheel drive. But since the engine and transmission sit right over the rear drive wheels they do very well in off-road situations. The wind-shield folds down and the doors come off making these one of the most fun vehicles you will probably ever own.
