Vehicle Detail

Excellent car! My dad bought it new and I bought it from him in 2001. It was in and out of a garage (garaged about 50% of the time) in Monroe, Washington (45 minutes North of Seattle) until June 2005. From June 2005 to now it has been parked in outdoor parking lots in Alexandria, Virginia. It has had regular maintenance its entire life and is in good and clean condition. The engine has always been amazingly reliable. I have been filling it with premium gasoline for at least the last seven years because the acceleration is much better with premium, and I put in a bottle of fuel injector cleaner in a full tank of gas from time to time just to make sure everything keeps running smoothly. The car has amazing visibility out of all windows and is very comfortable and easy to drive. In an effort to be the opposite of what bothers me about car salesman, and because most of you probably won't be able to test drive the car before the end of the auction, I'm going to cover a bunch of small issues that never became big enough problems to require repair. 1. During the winter months, when first starting the car, sometimes it doesn't want to go into or out of first gear (or reverse) very easily. I've noticed that the car idles at 1800 rpm when it doesn't want to go into gear so I rev it up to 2000 rpm (and possibly pump the clutch a few times while in neutral) and then it'll drop into gear. After the first shift or two the car changes gears much more easily, and it never has a problem with higher gears, but for some reason shifting while cold tends to be a bit sticky. I've asked a few mechanics about it over the years (it's been that way for at least five years, and it doesn't seem to be getting worse) and they've all told me that the clutch is in good working order, so I just let the car warm up during the winter months and it works just fine. 2. Also during the winter months, during the warm up of the car, for some reason the idle will go through a phase of holding at around 1800 rpm, then it'll bounce or yo-yo between 800 rpm and 1800 rpm for a bit, and finally it'll settle in at 500-600 rpm after it warms up. It'll only happen if you let the car sit when it warms up, if you drive it right away then the rpm behavior corresponds to typical engine behavior. 3. When driving at night (and in general) sometimes the interior dash lights flicker or temporarily go all the way out (not the headlights, just the dash lights). I can never reproduce the problem for a mechanic but I've learned that if you adjust the brightness knob for the interior dash lights (located on the dash to the right of the steering wheel) they'll come back on. They've never gone all the way out, so I just make a small adjustment to the knob when they start to flicker. 4. The taillights attached to the trunk are somehow able to take on water when it rains. They used to fill up with water and cause the taillight bulbs to burn out so I drilled some small holes in the bottom of the plastic casing for each taillight to let the water drain out. 5. The a/c system ran out of R12 refrigerant about a year ago, and since you can't buy new R12 the mechanic put in recaptured R12. The a/c system works but it doesn't feel quite as cold with the recaptured R12 as it did with the new R12. 6. Sometimes the driver's side window squeaks and rubs slightly on the way down. It doesn't do it on the way up, but somehow it can get slightly misaligned on the way down. When I put the window down I pull the window toward me slightly so that it doesn't rub or squeak. 7. The electronic mirror adjustment has a mind of its own. I rarely adjust the mirrors, so I forgot about this until recently (when I tried to adjust the mirrors from covering my blind spots to more typical mirror positions), but when you try to adjust the mirrors using the electronic controls the mirrors seem to go crazy and dive for a particular corner. I attempted to use the electronic mirror adjustment but I ended up adjusting the mirrors manually. This was never an issue for me because I am the only one who drives the car so the mirror positions very rarely needed adjustment. 8. The timing belt was replaced at about 200,000 miles, and the new timing belt has a bit more of a high pitch whine than the old one did. It's a pretty minor issue, but I still think it's worth mentioning. Everything that I didn't cover is in good working order as far as I know. The seals on the engine are in good shape, the battery is about three years old, the tires are in good condition and the wheels are aligned, the retractable antenna is in perfect working order, the floor mats have just been shampooed (after the pictures were taken), the oil has just been changed, and the car has just under a full tank of gas. I'm also throwing in four or five spare taillight bulbs (I stocked up when they were going out regularly), a spare hot/cold adjustment knob, and a spare set of Valeo windshield wiper blades that I didn't need but may come in handy. Shipping: buyer is responsible for picking up vehicle and/or any vehicle shipping costs. Payment: $100 deposit is due within 24 hours of auction's end (preferably via PayPal), remaining balance is due when picking up the car. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Thanks, Dan
