Vehicle Detail
**** For buy-it-now buyer at the BIN price, I’ll also include the following***** · A second set of 14" BMW bottlecaps, these with Falken Azenis RT 615 tires in excellent condition · A 4-into-1 step header (pipes go from 1.65 to 1.75 inches into a 2.5-inch collector) that’s ideal for the carb/cam combo in the car · One box of Dynamat Extreme soundproofing (If all you do is take all three to your local swap meet, you’re probably still $300-$400 ahead...) The Car This is a quick and fun old-school BMW that turns heads and draws smiles everywhere it goes. I acquired this car from its original owner, a doctor from Tempe who drove it for more than 30 year, and have done most of the work listed below. It's a fabulous little car - dependable, fun and quick. I hate to sell it, but it's time. The car is mechanically very strong and sound. There are a few chips in the paint (visible in the photos) and the passenger-side wiper arm needs repair or replacing. There is no rust. (Tiny bit of light surface rust in the spare tire well, which are usually rotted out in these cars.) The car is currently tagged through April 2013. The car had been in a low-speed front-end crash before I got it. The doctor, long-retired and driving against his doctor’s advice) pulled out of a parking lot into a center-turn lane, not seeing the Chevy Suburban pulling into the same lane. The Suburban was riding on big tires and its bumper hit the BMW high on the nose on the driver’s side. It damaged the nose, the hood and the left front fender. (No damage to the Suburban, apparently.) The hit did not tweak the frame or misalign the car. The lower chassis rails are straight and square, and the car steers, corners, tracks and brakes straight and solid. The damage was just sheet metal, and I replaced the hood and fender but couldn’t find a good rust-free nose at the time and so simply straightened the nose. I did get new hinges and installed them, but couldn’t get the mounts perfectly aligned. Opening and closing the hood was putting pressure on the hood, and I didn’t want that to eventually tweak the hood or crack the paint, so I removed the hinges and installed the hood pins. It fit the classic rally look I was going for, and I’ve found makes it much easier to do any maintenance or mechanical work. The repaired area is shown in the photos, but not visible with the hood down. Here's what's been done to make this one of the best driving and handling 2002s around – all since 2010, so everything is essentially new: Engine: 292 Schrick cam regrind by Ireland Engineering; Webber 38 carb; Intake manifold polished and port-matched; Piano-top pistons; Larger 320i radiator, with overflow catch tank; Driver-switched electric fan; Silicon hoses; MSD ignition; California smog equipment included in sale; Urethane motor mounts; Battery relocated to marine box neatly mounted in trunk Drivetrain: Four-speed; BMW limited-slip diff installed Brakes: Front: Girling calipers, 320i vented rotor upgrade; Rear: 320i bigger drum upgrade Suspension: H&R Sport Springs, front and rear (1.25” drop); Bilstein Sport Shocks & Struts; Suspension Techniques anti-roll bars, front and rear (22.5mm front, 19.mm5 adjustable rear); Racetep fixed camber plates and front strut brace. Interior: Volvo seats custom-fit front and rear; Lightweight door cards; Shift light on column; Momo pedals and dead-pedal; Schroth Rallye 3 Harnesses – Safe and DOT-approved; Fire extinguisher; Third-brake light in rear window - probably the single best safety upgrade you can make on an older car Chassis: Front bumper delete; Front air dam from Ireland Engineering; Knee-line trim delete; Rear bumper replaced with light-weight Ireland Engineering ABS bumper. Custom paint Wheels & Tires: 14-inch BMW Bottlecaps with new BF Goodrich Traction TAs 185/65/14 Included in the sale: Five Mahle oil filters; California smog equipment, including a CARB-compliant Webber 32/36 carburetor. The car passed California smog in 2010 when I purchased and registered it. The smog pumps and Weber 32 will have to be reinstalled to smog. Car cover I'm happy to answer any questions.
