Vehicle Detail
J2 304 was built on October 4th 1932 and was shipped to the distributor in Ireland where it was sold by McSorley and Sons in Ulster. This J2 won it's class driven by J.S. C. Cupples in the Ulster Automobile Club Ballybannon Hillclimb and was featured in an MG factory advertisement June 1933 in the magazine The Motor. See page 29 of Mike Hawke's book "75 Years of the J2 MG". The car was shipped to the U.S. sometime in the early sixties and was disassembled. The body parts were loosely put together for transport but the engine has not been assembled since then. When I purchased the car it was obvious that the wood frame of the body was in poor shape and I commissioned a new body to be built in England. There is a photographic record of the body being constructed and I have posted a few of them. The new body is in its shipping crate as it arrived from England. I also had new fenders, a new fuel tank, and bonnet sides built at the same time. The car was last in the MG factory service facility in Abingdon on April 24, 1940. I have the repair order. Fifty years ago when the car was shipped to the U.S. it did not have it's original engine, but a complete original J2 engine was installed. I have spent years buying new and correct parts. The instruments were restored by John Marks of Vintage Restorations in England. It is the optional deluxe set of instruments. A new instrument panel is included. Seven years ago the first run of new brake drums were cast for the J2 in England. I ordered a set of four out of the 100 sets that were available then. I have a new set of brake cables for the mechanical brakes. These are the non-coated type which are no longer produced, they're from the original manufacturer. I purchased a new set of Blockley triple stud tires which are pictured and are still in their original wrappers. I also have new Blockley tubes. I have the windshield frame and mounting posts. I had new floorboards made to exactly match the originals at the Whitworth shop. It took a year for them to be delivered, they're still in the box. Of course I have the original set of 5 outside lace 19" wire wheels. There are new trunnions and miscellaneous rubber chassis parts. The original body with body fittings is included. There is no upholstery or seats. The car is being sold with a bill of sale only, no title. High bidder is responsible for pick-up and shipping. No warranties are expressed or implied. A deposit of $1,000. via Paypal after the auction, the balance due within 5 days with certified check.I've had a few questions about the new body and wanted to clarify an issue. The photos of the body being built in England are of the new body that is included with the car. When the body was finished the coachbuilder brushed on the dark red primer to keep surface rust from forming on the new sheet metal. It's not red paint. When you are ready to prime and paint the body, the red oxide primer is supposed to be wiped off with a clean up lacquer thinner exposing the brand new metal. On Jun-20-12 at 15:49:18 PDT, seller added the following information: I was asked to post a photo of the J2 engine number stamped into the block, which I have done.On Jun-21-12 at 11:40:31 PDT, seller added the following information: I was asked to verify that the chassis number is stamped on the hood (bonnet) hinge to confirm that it is original to the car and also has the correct color code. I did this and have posted a photo of the number on the bonnet hinge.
