Vehicle Detail
Up for auction is one 1940 Ford Tudor Sedan. I bough this car about 3 months ago and had no intention of selling it. Unfortunately, things have changed. I have a verbal history on the car that I think is interesting enough to be passed along. The car was originally purchased in Kansas City by a wealthy businessman who bought it as a graduation gift for his daughter. And though it may have been a very practical gift it probably had the same impact as giving a teenage girl a minivan today. She drove it for a few years and then the car made it's way to the family farm where it was stored for many years. The second owner bought the car in the 70's and after driving it for a number of years as found, he began a long restoration that ended in the early 90'swith a new paint, wiring, gauges, running boards, interior, suspension and the like. We have him to thank for preserving this car at a time where it could have just as easily ended up turquoise, with billet wheels and a tweed interior. The 3rd owner purchased the car, put it on a trailer and drove it directly to Carlisle PA in 1996. He sold it there to the 4th owner without ever taking it off of the trailer. The 4th owner had the engine rebuilt, the trans gone through and the columbia rear end rebuilt as well. He has receipts that he gave me when I bough the car in 2012. I am the 5th owner. The car is in very good condition and I have been driving regularly having put several hundred miles on it since I bough it. The engine is solid and runs very well. I replaced the float as it had a small hole. The rest of the fuel system is new. The tank is an alloy variety that has a drain to get all of the old gas out, which I did. There is a new fuel filter on both ends of the electric fuel pump and the manual pump is new as well. Please not that the mechanical pump is not hooked up and the large fuel filter before the carburetor is temporary since I did not want to go to the trouble of permanently mounting it since I planned on using the mechanical pump eventually. There is a new coil, points, condensor, cap and rotor. The timing has been set and I see no need for adjustment. The regulator is new and the generator has been tested and inspected and found to be good. The gauges all work and are fairly accurate. The fuel gauge does not register now because of a faulty sending unit. The dash lights do not work because of a faulty switch. A good one is included with the car. The brakes have been cleaned and bled. I did rebuild the passenger right wheel cylinder since it had a small leak. The steering is firm and positive. All fittings have been recently greased and inspected for signs of wear or fauilure. I would suggest replacing the tires though. They are hard as bricks and will bounce the car around if you are not watching. The tires are 6.50x16 and should be replaced. A 6.00x16 would be the stock size. The shocks work well along with all suspension components I would have the car alighned to center on the wheel though. It goes down the road with the wheel slightly off. The paint is a bit rough in places and has started to stretch and even pop around a few corners. The worst of it can be seen on the roof above the back window where it has popped and flaked. Remember that this is an older restoration and has some cosmetic flaws that make this a great driver and not a show car. The engine runs well and needs nothing. The transmission shifts well and only needs the shift linkage adjusted. It does pop out of second under sharp deceleration if you don't hold the lever. The columbia two speed rear does not shift. I have not investigated. It may be as simple as a vac leak or switched lines. I do not know. But I am told that it has been rebuilt. And judging from the exterior condition and the honest candor of the previous owner, I believe it. Also clear VA title in my name. This car is in very driveable condition. I have never had it overheat or act ill mannered. I feel confident that this car will offer years of faithful service with minor work and basic maintenance. You are welcome to see the car inperson and we encourage you to ask lots of questions if you are a serious buyer. We have the car for sale locally and reserve the right to cancel this auction at any time. A 1000 deposit is due within 24 hours. And the transaction must be completed within 7 days. We can store the car inside once it is paid for. We will also help with reasonable requests for shipping, but we will not quote shipping. We will not contact a ship a shipper or quote shipping. Heck, just drive the car home. Cash is king. We will accept checks, but the car and title stays with us until the check clears. The car can be seen at : Joe Smith Early Ford & Hot Rod 1113 Blackstone Ave Glen Allen, VA 23060 804-264-1953 On May-24-12 at 06:50:13 PDT, seller added the following information: I should specify that the alignment would be needed to center the steering wheel, not the wheels on the car. The wheels go down the road just fine. The steering wheel is off center and it is irritating to me. It may not bother you, but I felt like it was worth mentioning because it is on my "to do" list if I end up keeping the car. The running boards are early reproduction and have been on the car long enough to show signs of their age. The rubber is splitting and should also be considered as good driver condition and not of show car quality. I also wanted to reiterate that this is an older restoration. I would say that it is a good "twenty footer", but it will not stand up to the scrutiny of the judges at a car show. It may be perfect for your local cruise in or a lazy Sunday drive as it sits. This is in good driver condition and there are places that will need touched up, minor flaws that do not show up well in photos and imperfections that I consider normal wear and tear. Again, feel free to ask questions.
