wildsidetrading Store ~1986 Pontiac TOJAN Trans Am~ Please read entire description prior to bidding! HISTORY: This is not a kit car. This car was purchased at a Pontiac dealer just like you see it. A company called Knudsen built it and it was sold through select Pontiac dealerships in Florida, Texas, California and New Jersey. Pontiac sent them to Knudsen for the conversion and Knudsen sent them off to the dealerships much like Saleen and others are doing with Mustangs today. Knudsen is still making custom cars and are now known as Rage Automotive : http://www.rageexoticvehicles.com/history.html . Knudsen built only 300 cars based on F-body cars from '84-'91. Half were Camaro's (known as Carralo) and the rest were Tojans making this 1 of 150 ever made and many of those were shipped out of the country. You will be the only one on the block with one of these (probably your whole state)! All panels are fiberglass, only the roof and doors are metal. This one is especially rare because it has the Recaro leather interior and digital dashboard. I was also told that Tojans were equipped with Gale Banks front suspensions but am not sure. This IS the most unique F-body car ever made regardless of generation. Previous owner thinks the mileage is correct @ 53k miles but it is exempt on the title. The odometer which is hard to see unless light is on it has 6 digits and the miles are at 5 digits so I believe that the miles are real. Being that I'm fairly sure the mph shows higher than actual, the true mileage may actually be less. Tojan's have made appearances on TV in Miami Vice, Alien Nation and the movie Collision Course starring Jay Leno and Pat Morita from Karate Kid (the older guy, kung fu master). I remember these cars from their inception in the 80's and just could not resist buying this one. More pics of my Tojan can be seen here: http://s190.photobucket.com/albums/z251/AstrocreepVIII/1986%20Pontiac%20Tojan/#!cpZZ1QQtppZZ28 Note: Since purchasing this car many things changed in my life. I sold my house and lost my big garage in the process. I also had some health issues and I no longer have the space to store it or the ambition to work on it. I simply have too many cars/boats, etc and need to thin the heard. I was planning on driving the car in stock condition for a while and then swap a 383 stroker and street/strip 700r4 I have in my garage. Didn't work out as I sold my house and decided to downsize. The car needs some work but not much to be show ready. An easy restoration or restomod. The car is stored indoors at the warehouse I work out of. Below I will give a detailed and honest description of the car. Keep in mind it's rarity and age. I have it insured through Hagerty insurance for only $140/year. I have driven it maybe 50 miles since I got it and you would not believe the attention this car gets on the road. Here is a video of the car per the previous owner: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1yovXLwidBk CONDITION: BODY: The body is in great condition. There are a few small dings on the doors and a very slight crack on the front bumper but otherwise it is fine. The entire car is fiberglass save for the doors and roof. Having a body this nice is the most important issue with a rare car like this. PAINT: The paint looks great. Very vibrant red and has a great shine. I would not call it show quality as I noticed a run by the front drivers fender and there a few chips here and there but a great driver quality paint job nonetheless. UNDER CARRIAGE: Excellent, no rust whatsover under the car, on the frame, under the hood and so forth. Mechanicals: ENGINE: It has the original 305 motor that has been converted to a carburetor but was a TPI car and I still have all the parts from the TPI. This car will need some mechanical work although it does run and drive. I bought it several months ago in non-running condition. Owner said it just needed a starter and mentioned that the TPI (fuel injection) had issues. I put a new starter in and it cranked but would not start, so I installed a NEW fuel pump and it did start. It ran ok but it stuttered and something was not right. I had it checked out and replaced several components on the TPI and nothing seemed to work. I finally decided to do a carburetor conversion. I installed a new Holley 600 cfm carb, intake manifold, Accel high performance distributor (could not use the computer controlled one that was on the car), fuel pressure regulator, air cleaner, etc. After this, the car ran great. The motor had no knocks, does not blow smoke and is smooth. I finally got to drive the car. So I'm cruising right along and noticed it was running hot after maybe 10 miles of driving so I drove it back to the shop. The mechanic working on the car tells me it sounds like the radiator and the front fan wasn't working either. I installed a NEW radiator and a NEW electric fan. The problem persists, the car runs hot after several miles of use. Another mechanic tells me it probably needs head gaskets. Oil and coolant are NOT mixing, at least seemingly, there is no smoke out the tail pipes but we had it running without the radiator cap on and there were bubbles in the radiator so based on that the mechanic says he is sure it is a head gasket issue. I'm not 100% sure that it needs head gaskets but that is what I was told after changing out the whole cooling system :(. If you do the work yourself it won't be an expensive job. I still drive it short distances from my shop for errands but thats about it. New parts over the last few months since I got it:Alternator, water pump, radiator, Holley carb, performance intake, fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, electric cooling fan, Accel hi-po distributor, Spectre rechargeable air filter (just like K&N), etc. plus labor. Over $2000 in all. Air Conditioning: Blows cold but only comes out on top of the dash and not the vents. Probably needs blend door repair. Transmission: 700R4. The transmission shifts great but until it gets warmed up it shifts at a high rpm. After you drive it a bit it shifts perfectly fine. I think it has something to do with the carb conversion as it didn't do it when the TPI was installed. Needs adjusting? There is also a transmission leak, my mechanic changed the pan gasket but it still leaks, haven't called on him afterwards so I don't know where the leak is. Tires: Appear to be in very good condition. Previous owner said they were new and they look it. While driving I hear what sounds like one may have a split belt but it handles and rides fine. Wheels: These came on the car. They are real 3 piece Gotti wheels which were normally reserved for high end cars like Porsches, Ferraris and the like. These wheels will need some refinishing and are missing the center caps but roll out nice. These wheels were and are very expensive. If you choose to go with a custom wheel you could install a VERY wide wheel/tire combination on this car as the fenders and quarters are far wider than a stock f body car ever was. BRAKES/SUSPENSION: Car rides nice and straight. Steering wheel is centered and brakes seem good although I have not removed the wheels to do a visual check. When I first got the car I did some research and I read that the Tojan was equipped with a Gale Banks front suspension and sway bar. I cannot verify this but it is a very thick sway bar in diameter.Interior: This Tojan has the Recaro leather seat package which is a rare option for a Tojan. The front seats should be redone (especially the drivers side) and the rears look great. Seats like these were normally found in exotics back then and they are well worth restoring. The headliner is sagging and needs to be redone. Dashboard: This Tojan is equipped with a digital display which is another rare option for a Tojan. The displays look fine, the dash lights up in red and it looks really cool. The gauges are not accurate though. The speedometer gauge seems to show a higher mph than you are going. The tachometer seems fine. The amp gauge doesn't seem to be accurate nor does the fuel gauge. The temp gauge I'm not sure about. There is a 2 gauge pod that has a temp and amp gauge hooked up. This is not a Pontiac digital dash, this one was part of the Tojan deal. The dash pad is perfect. The car originally had real wood accents over the instrument cluster and passenger side dash. I still have these pieces but they need to be sanded and refinished. Exhaust: Stock exhaust with cat still there. It does have a Flowmaster muffler but the pipe leading to the muffler has a hole. The hole isn't from rust as there is none on the underside. It almost looks like some sort of accident, still it has a nice subdued muscle car tone to it. Since the mechanic installed the new fuel pump (had to remove exhaust to get to the tank), the exhaust rattles and you can feel it inside at times. Needs to be aligned. Overall this is a super rare and cool car in need of some TLC. What a great starting point for a truly unique hot rod, maybe an LSx 6 speed conversion or what have you? You just cannot get any rarer with a total production of just 150 cars. Take into account that Knudsen themselves said that no 2 cars they built were alike and it becomes 1 of 1. I'm starting this auction at a very low price with no reserve. This car is irreplaceable at this price and I already regret putting it up for sale but need the space. You will not find another one in this condition at this price again. THE CAR IS LOCATED IN CLEARWATER, FLORIDA 33762. BUYER MUST ARRANGE SHIPPING. I WILL WORK WITH THE SHIPPING COMPANY OF YOUR CHOICE. THANKS FOR CHECKING MY CAR OUT AND GOOD LUCK BIDDING!
