1996 Mercedes E300D Diesel: Veg-fuel ready This is a 1996 E300D that underwent a VegRev vegetable oil conversion and was run on biodiesel, standard diesel, and filtered vegetable oil for about three years. The components for running on vegetable oil have since been disconnected but are all still in the car, including the second fuel tank in the trunk. Here is the good: -- Drives great-- Body/interior in very good condition. The car has been housed exclusively in Texas and northern California. Second owner (purchased in 2008 with 67,000 miles).-- Fuel-efficient -- approximately 30 mpg-- Biodiesel-compatible fuel lines-- Can be used as a diesel- or biodiesel-only car, or the two-tank veggie fuel system can be hooked up again Here is the bad: -- Odometer recently froze at 100,020. Actual mileage is about 100 miles over that.-- There is an error message almost constantly present on the dashboard (see photo below) relating to the electronic traction system. Whenever this is showing, the speedometer does not work.-- Car occasionally stalls or has trouble starting. This is because of occasional clogging of the fuel line, a consequence of running biodiesel through the system. We cleaned out the fuel tank and replaced a pump, so this happens rarely now.-- Faint residual fuel smell in the passenger compartment, from when I had a loose seal on the fuel line, and some diesel got under the rear seat. This scent is fading with time and air circulation. Overall, it's a great car. It is probably best suited for someone willing to tinker under the hood occasionally or who has easy access to a mechanic. The car is being sold as-is.
