Vehicle Detail

1970 Mercedes Benz 280se W108 California Blue plate special! I have lost my storage, all my projects need to go. I purchased this car with lien paperwork for parts, but to me, she is no parts car. I was hanging on to her to retore, now she has to go. This is not a barn find, this is a "rear of the European Mechanics shop yard, under a carport and cover", find. I was actually looking at a different car to purchase for a parts car to a w109 restoration, and ofcourse, saw the star sticking up from under the car cover, walked over and looked, then purchased her. Here is the story, I think it really was the little old lady from pasadena. The car was taken to a shop I know for some tune up work over 10 years ago. The customer was ill and later passed away, her son was to pick up the car and never did. That is why there is lien paperwork and no title to pass. I was actually looking at a different car to purchase for a parts car to a restoration, and ofcourse, saw the star sticking up from under the car cover, walked over and looked, then purchased her. The lien paperwork is valid and legal in California, I do not know how this applies in other states, should be fine but you need to handle that one on your own. We found paperwork underneath the mat in the trunk all the way back to 1974. The womans employment records, registrations, haven't checked but I believe she may have been the original owner as well. She lived and worked in pasadena, the car has the original blue plates. I purchased this for a parts car but she is too good. Original paint minus clear coat, all the parts, 58k original miles, there is no way this car has turned but I will never know for sure. Body is straight and solid, there is minor surface rust on the rear fender near the trunk (see pics) where the paint chipped or scratched and the metal has some slight surface rust. Yes, she runs. When I purchased her we put in a battery and some gas, she turned right over. Changed the fuel lines, tank and pump but have not done anything else. I would not attempt to see if she is road worthy without at least the most basic of filter and fluid changes. The tires are what she came with and hold air as they should but still, I know little of the car and would not attempt to drive her around without inspecting and servicing her first. Ask away, I know little other than this car would be the perfect project for those with skills from novice to master, depending on how you want to see her end up. The 6 is an easy engine to work on, Mercedes used this engine in so many cars the information is easy to get and abundant. Even the W108 had a mass run, there are so many sites with everything you need to work on this car. She is missing the key, but, I will offer a drivers door handle, ignition switch, trunk lock and glove box lock with key all keyed the same. Really, I know little, she is as is, parts or restoration. If you are local, please come check her out, I think she really is a diamond in the rough!
