Vehicle Detail
Mercedes 1959 220S - Sedan I have to part with this partially completed project - it is getting difficult to work on due to arthritis. The odometer shows 8,619 miles but I'm pretty sure that not the correct mileage - there are only five places on the odometer, so more that likely it has turned over a few times ... no way of knowing for sure.I just rebuilt the carburetors so the engine runs fine. I overhauled the rear wheel cylinders which were leaking when I bought the car in 2010. I removed all four brake drums and had them turned and installed new brake shoes all around along with a new master cylinder. The brake booster was rebuilt by Will Samples and that has been installed and I am now in the proces of bleeding the brakes and sorting out a small brake leak near the reservoir connection to the master cylinder. The tires are new with less than 50 miles on them and new motor mounts have been installed. The engine compartment has been cleaned including installing refurbished heater cores on both sides (with fans in each). The oil has been changed and new plugs, wires, rotor and distributor cap have been installed. The valves have been adjusted and timing set and the car runs very nicely although there is a pronounced whine coming from the rear end. The car is in poor condition cosmetically as can be seen by the pictures. I will include a replacement windshield, new windshield seal and new trunk seal. I have done some preliminary sanding of the trunk lid just to get rid of the "brush marks" from the prior owner. The trunk has been cleaned up - I sanded away some surface rust and then sprayed rust-encapsulator and then two coats of black. The car will come with a bunch of spare/additional parts that I had left over from a prior 1958 220S. The small chrome strip on the lower right front fender will be part of the sale, but I do not have the longer piece that goes along the bottom of the right door. There also is a spare "top of fender" chrome spear piece that holds the turn signal lens that I will include. Extras will include rear view mirror, fuel pump, front brake kits, two tail lights (not good condition), sway bar rubber etc.The interior is pretty decent except for the front seat. Most of the wood is in above average condition - it could be cleaned up and used as is or removed and restored. There are some typical cracks in the dash on the right side and the right side window wood might need some repair. The door panels are all in "good" shape and the back seat may just need some TLC to recover - a little Leatherique might save the day. Obviously the front seat needs compete repair or some decent sheepskins to cover the seat. The radio looks to be the original Blaupunkt and the clock is working - go figure! The exterior needs some body work - nothing major, but there are a number of small dents that will need fixing and of course a paint job. The bumpers are in fair shape but could use a few dents fixed and some re-chroming.This is a "project car" but one that you can immediately drive and enjoy. You are encouraged to have the car inspected prior to your purchase. It won't take much to make this a true Mercedes-Benz classic! I will be happy to answer all questions, just give me a call: (909) 518-0688 - I live in Upland, Ca just 30 miles east of Los Angeles.
