Vehicle Detail

1970 Volvo 1800E 2 Door Sport Coupe B20E - 4spd OD The 1970 came with the fuel-injected 1800E, which had the B20E engine with Bosch D- Jetronic Fuel Injection system and a revised camshaft, and produced 130 bhp (97 kW) without sacrificing fuel economy. Top speed was around 190 km/h (120 mph) and acceleration from 0–100 km/h (0-62.1 mph) took 9.5 seconds. In addition, the 1970 model was the first 1800 with four-wheel disc brakes; till then the 1800 series had front discs and rear drums. Engine, Transmission & Drivetrain: My son and I own this car outright and the pictures were taken this week. This car is all original and authentic. It has 118114 miles! We know that the Volvo had sat under a Douglas Fir for the three or four years. When we bought it and it wasn't running and we trailered it home. I drained the fluids, filters and gave it some fresh 10-30w oil, a new oil filter and some fresh 50/50 anti-freeze. I replaced the dead battery with a brand new 5 year Exide. The previous owner had drained the fuel and ran the engine until the fuel was purged from the system. I primed it and added a fresh 5 gallons of Union 76 premium fuel. It wouldn't start, so I detected the fuel pump was bad, I replaced it with a used one from my 73 Porsche 914. Porsche and Volvo share the same Bosch D-Jetronic EFI system, so many of the parts are interchangable. Within about 45-60 seconds of cranking the engine fired up and ran rough for about 1-2 minute as the air purged itself from the fuel lines. I then adjusted the idle and now it fires right up and purrs in all RPM's. The engine does not smoke and the only oil leak is from an auxilary oil filter mounted on the fender. During a short test drive I found the clutch and transmission works perfectly. The brakes stop satisfactory, but the rotor will need to be turned. I replaced the aged and cracking tires with a good used set of Toyo Proxs H4 all seasons. The Body and Interior: The paint is the origianal red. Sometime in its history it was in a minor front end crash. The left front fender has been replaced and then it was painted and blended to match. The paint is now faded and in need of restoration. The body does have some minor rusting on the top sides of the rear quarter panels, but there does not appear to be any deep penitrating rust. The underside chassis appears solid and there is no signs of any floor board or body to frame rust. The glass is all good, no cracks or clouding and the seals will need eventually need replacement. Comparables: This last February we took the Volvo to a Swedish Car club "show and shine" in Issaquah Washington. We displayed it along with about eight other P1800's from the Pacific Northwest. There were a couple of race cars, daily drivers and show cars. All the cars were unique in their own various states of condition. Because of this cars condition, I rated it as the "ugly duckling." But what I found by comparing it to the others, is that this one was more original and authentic than all the others. This 1800's B20E engine, transmission and drivetrain is all original. It's body is all original and unmolested. It's not butchered up with customizations. All the chrome trim, even though it's rusty, it's all original. The same is true for the interior. The dash top and the carpeting will need to be pulled and replaced. The seats still have good pading and vinyl material is still soft, flexable and there are no major rips or tears in the seating vinyl or the headliner. All the interior panels, knobs, handles and buttons appear to be in place. All the gauges and exterior lights, signals, tail and brake lights work. The car even has the dealer installed air conditioning. The compressor, along with the interior a/c, heater fans all work. The A/C will need to be recharged. Summary: This is a decent Volvo P1800E. Most restoration experts/technician love cars in this present condition, because it has minimal rust along with a straight original body. Yes...its not perfect, but its a car with potental to give a new owner an opportunity to restore and provide years of enjoyment. Or, it could give an investor an opportunity to earn some money. In your research you will find a number of P1800E's available from $1000 to $17,500. This one is by no means at the top of the scale, but it's not near the bottom either. With good old fashion TLC and attention to detail during the restoration, this car has the potential to be worth $15,000 to $18,000 within a few years. At the time of writing this listing, there's a 72 edition that sold 04/03/2012 on ebay with 59 bids at $$19,203.00. (see 160773171043). So you can see the potential is there!
