THIS IS A RARE OPPORTUNITY FOR THE OLDSMOBILE OR HURST PERFORMANCE ENTHUSIAST. THE SECOND LOWEST PRODUCTION YEAR FOR ALL OF THE HURST/OLDS-1972. NOT ONLY IS THIS BEAUTY EXTREMELY RARE, IT IS FRAME OFF RESTORED, DOCUMENTED, RETAINS MANY ORIGINAL PARTS, AND LOW ORIGINAL MILEAGE. IT DOESN'T GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS FOR THE HURST/OLDS FAN. ONE OF 279 HARDTOPS BUILT. ORIGINAL SHEET METAL. ORIGINAL DRIVETRAIN. 50,668 MILES. DOCUMENTATION INCLUDES BUILD SHEET. THE TOTAL RESTORATION INVOLVED A PERIOD IN EXCESS OF TEN YEARS, WITH THE VEHICLE OFF THE ROAD AND IN STORAGE DURING THIS TIME. PLEASE READ THE COMPLETE DESCRIPTION AND VIEW ALL THE PHOTOS. EXAMPLES LIKE THIS ARE VERY SCARCE. THIS IS ONE OF THE NICEST EXAMPLES OF A REAL, DOCUMENTED 1972 HURST/OLDS IN THE COUNTRY. Throughout automotive production history, there was a long standing competition between Pontiac and Oldsmobile. The 442 was developed from this competition. It was basically a quick response to the Pontiac GTO, which was launched in mid '64 and proved to be an immediate success. The problem for the manufacturer was that the car immediately took on the image of a gentleman's muscle car. They were also hampered by engine size. Even in 1968, GM held a corporate edict that forbade the installation of engines larger than 400 cu. in. Things changed in 1968. Shifter mogul George Hurst had a 1968 442, and he transplanted a 455 cu. in. engine into the car. He discovered the swap to be relatively simple and highly successful. Doc Watson took this swap a few steps further, adding modifications, special paint, and a Hurst shifter. The Hurst/Olds was born. Watson was able to skirt the factory engine displacement limit by insisting that he was outsourcing the modifications. Over the years, there were many locations that performed these modifications. In 1968, 1969, and 1972, the cars were built at the Lansing plant, and driven 3 miles down the road to 728 Porter St., the Demmer Engineering Facility that performed the modifications for the Hurst Performance Research Co. Years later it was revealed that the 455 engines were actually installed on the assembly line, before shipment to Demmer. It was a well kept secret indeed. All of the Hurst Olds were originally manufactured at the Lansing facility, except for the 1988 20th Anniversary Edition. In the span of production years 1968-1988, Hurst Olds were built in 10 of those years. Less than 16,000 Hurst Olds were built in total. Through muscle car history, the H/O has been known as one of the most rare and desirable examples in existence. The tremendous popularity of these ground pounders is due also to the highly recognizable representative of the Hurst corporation, Linda Vaughn. This vivacious young lady held about every performance beauty crown in the business, including Miss Atlanta Raceway, Miss Pure Firebird, spokesmodel for Gratiot Auto Supply, Miss Union 76, and of course Miss Hurst. In the late '60's she was in such great demand that Hurst had to hire Hurstettes to fill in for Linda at various events. She later became Vice President of Public Relations for Mr. Gasket. Click on this link for a short video of Linda from the public domain of You Tube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s65Jwm0lPo8&feature=related Linda was elected into the Drag Racing Hall of Fame, chosen SEMA Person of the Year, and even appeared in movies and television. She is still active in the hobby today, making personal appearances and interviews. Hurst and Oldsmobile co-built H/O models in 1968 and 1969. The next partnership did not rekindle itself until 1972, which as a very unique and interesting year. Due to a tragic accident involving the 1971 Indianapolis 500 Pace Car, a Dodge Challenger, manufacturers were reluctant to provide a pace car for the 1972 race. Hurst Performance stepped up and seized the opportunity to sponsor the pace car. Oldsmobile provided the Cutlass Supreme coupes and convertibles, and the rest is history. This was the only time an Indy Pace Car was not sponsored by a major automobile manufacturer, and the first time a major supplier's name was included in the title- the 1972 Hurst/Olds. The vehicle was developed by Hurst, not Oldsmobile. The 1972 had the lowest production numbers of any year except 1968- 279 hardtops, 220 hardtops with sunroofs, and 130 convertibles. There are many clones and replicas out there. In addition to factory documents, an easy method of authentication is the Fisher body tag. ALL of the factory production 1972 Hurst/Olds had the W45 or W46 designation. Only the Hurst/Olds implemented this designation. All others are post production conversions of some sort. THE CAR: NOTE- THIS IS A NUT AND BOLT FRAME OFF RESTORATION THAT HAS NOT BEEN ON THE ROAD FOR OVER TEN YEARS DURING THE ONGOING RESTORATION PROCESS. THE VEHICLE HAS BASICALLY NO ROAD MILES OR SHAKEDOWN MILES, SINCE IT WAS JUST FINALLY COMPLETED LAST WEEK. THE LUCKY BUYER OF THIS CAR WILL HAVE TO PERFORM THE COMMON SENSE SHAKEDOWN PROCEDURE OF A TOTALLY RESTORED CLASSIC CAR. A) THE H/O NEEDS SOME ROAD MILES TO SEAT EVERYTHING IN, EXPAND GASKETS AND SEALS, ETC. B) THERE WILL ALSO BE A NEED TO CHECK AND RETORQUE VARIOUS FASTENERS, BOLTS, NUTS, ETC AFTER A PERIOD OF DRIVING. C) THERE MAY BE SOME FINAL TUNING ADJUSTMENTS. THIS IS THE NATURAL PROCESS OF DUE DILIGENCE THAT EVERY CAR ENTHUSIAST PERFORMS ON A TRUE RESTORATION IN WHICH THE BODY IS SEPERATED FROM THE FRAME. DO NOT EXPECT TO PURCHASE THIS CAR AND LOG 10,000 MILES WITHOUT TURNING A WRENCH. CLICK ON THIS LINK FOR A FILE OF ALMOST 200 PHOTOS OF THE CAR FROM THE PUBLIC DOMAIN OF YOU TUBE: http://s1102.photobucket.com/albums/g453/tnbargaingiftstore/72%20Hurst%20Olds/ Password is hurst72 EXTERIOR: The Oldsmobile retains all of its' original sheet metal. In 2004, the body was completely stripped and refinished in the correct Cameo White base coat/clear coat. The correct Hurst/Olds stripe kit has just been applied. Finish is mirror gloss.
