1998 GTI VR6 Altoona, PA Chassis: 190XXX Engine: 91XXX Price: $3700 These are well built, tight handling hatchbacks. The car is pretty quick, and doesn't look too bad for its age. The original engine hydro-locked. The replacement engine is much more fresh, and runs really well. I'm just out of time, space, and the willingness to work on it. The engine idles smooth, pulls hard, and runs like a champ. The clutch is holding just fine, and the transmission shifts through all gears without grinding. The interior is in decent shape, and like the rest of the car - could be very nice with a little work. You can pretty much come pick it up and drive it back anywhere. I think the tires will take a few thousand more miles. It does need an alignment and vibrates once you get near and over 65ishmph. You can cruise home @ 70 without being shaken out of the car though. I can't say enough about the VR6 in the car. On country roads @50mph it will average almost 31mpg, yet it will still throw the ashtray into the rear seats if you step on it... and the sound... Currently has (4) polkaudio DXI650's that sound really nice, but not as nice as the borla coming out the back of the car. Inside or out- this thing sounds awesome. The hood is dented up, but other than that the outside still looks quite nice. It has a lot of potential... but... it has the following issues and I don't have time to fix them. Try not to be too frightened by the detailed description of every issue. I just want to be thorough and I most certainly don't want you to encounter any surprises. Big Issues: The previous owner broke one of the bolts for the rear engine mount, and couldn't get it out - so they incorrectly put it back together. You can rev the engine as hard as you want, but you will want to try to shift as smoothly as possible. The engine is secure, and the other two mounts are holding fine. The passenger side mount just allows for too much movement and needs repaired. It needs the old bolt removed, and a new one installed. If you know how to rev match- you won't even know it's broken. Slam the gears and pressure plate around and it will vibrate. Don't do it until the car is fixed. Unless you've put cash in my hand, and have a signed title in yours. Then do whatever you want with it. You can drive the car anywhere you want to go as hard or fast as you want. Once you're in a gear - you can rev it to the moon - but in between gears you HAVE to baby it. I am exaggerating a little, but like I said I have no desire to mislead. The car comes with a Black Forest Industries Stage .5 insert installed in the troublesome passenger side mount, and the rest of a brand new Black Forest Industries stage .5 Kit in the box. Needs tires soon, and alignment Power steering currently bypassed due to fluid leak from unknown source. All equipment is still installed Annoying issues: Showing typical rust in fuel door, under hatch glass, on rocker Intermittent CEL for secondary air incorrect flow. Needs new fog lights Lower grills missing from bumper The alternator is hooked up incorrectly. I have put 4,000 miles on the car like this, and it is working fine. It is just something I would want to fix in the future. It isn't going to the starter, it's connected straight to the battery. Scuffed rear bumper, hood needs replaced cosmetically but sits, latches, and unlatches perfectly, various scratches, and dings. Missing one trim piece on passenger fender MAF wont display outside air temp, cruise and key-less entry seem to be missing. Rear defroster doesn't work. A/C is warm. Needs some love, tlc, and a new owner. Clear PA title, ready to go. It needs two weekends of work and $300 in junk yard parts to be a damn nice summer ride. Come look at the car. If you win, you bought it. You don't show up, test drive it- complain at me about the motor mount, and walk off after beating the crap out of my car. I like this car. You will too. Just make sure you're comfortable in something that needs a little work before you leap into a project you can't handle. I would rather keep it, than have you sell it in pieces in six months. I also just don't want to put anyone in that position. It's iced tea, and I'll try to clean it out before I sell it. On Mar-22-12 at 05:14:18 PDT, seller added the following information: To put the speed in perspective - these cars are about as fast flat out, if not a little quicker off the line, than a 2012 GTI 2.0 Turbo. It does quite well in the snow. I really can't find an area to complain about it other than I don't have time for its problems. I read mixed reviews on them, 4/5 were great. 1/5 said the glue did this. They were bought at different times so hopefully they are different batches or something. I have the box and receipts to the front pair as well, and they will come with the car.They didn't have these speakers so the car will come with the rear speakers missing and only (2) polkaudio dxi650's. I will try to put VERY few miles on it now, but it is being driven a bit, and it is raining outside. Please note that although I keep talking about the speed and performance of the car, it is not driven in any aggressive manner whatsoever. I freak out about vehicles, and knowing the condition it is in - I baby it through town and only drive it 15 blocks to work each day, and highway miles on weekends. You are bidding on a vehicle fanatics vehicle. You will be quite satisfied once you get it in your driveway. You will be even more satisfied on Friday night, when you open up all of the windows and take it for a drive. The car starts just as easy, even when it isn't warmed up. This is to demonstrate a steady idle, and a freely revving engine without misfires or stutters.
