Vehicle Detail
1972 BMW 2002tii, original Fjord exterior color, blue/black two-tone interior color, VIN 2762461. Manufactured in August of 1972 in Munich, Germany. Matching VINs on the ID plate, the sheet metal stamp, the engine block and the steering column shroud. The car starts on the first turn of the key (with cold-start assist button) and runs strong. It does not burn oil and there is no bad-news blue smoke from the exhaust. I drove the car from Spokane, Washington, to San Luis Obispo, California, and back (2,100-mile round trip) in 2002 without incident. Since 2002, I have driven the car sparingly, averaging less than 400 miles per year. It idles nicely at 800 rpm and doesn't "search." For the maintenance and restoration history of this car from 1999 through 2001, please go here: http://www.parkitecture.org/tiigarage/diary.html I have garaged the car the entire time I have owned it except for an 11-month stretch in 2004 and I have never driven it in the rain. The odometer currently reads 06886. I'm guessing this is 206,886. I have kept fuel and mileage records since 2000, so I can tell you that the car has been driven only 3,720 miles since August of 2002 and only 500 miles in the last three years. This car is ridiculously original. About the only non-stock item is the steering wheel, which is a super-rare factory steering wheel from a BMW 2002 Turbo. -- Factory alloy wheels, including spare. -- Very rare molded plastic trunk cargo bin (factory accessory). -- Early trapezoid exterior rear-view mirrors on both sides of the car (passenger side was a factory accessory). -- Blaupunkt AM/FM radio with 2002-specific knobs and Metra center-console fascia. -- Mudflaps with roundel (factory accessory). -- Chrome exhaust tip (factory accessory). -- Period-correct Hella 144 chrome fog lights. In May 2001 the top end was rebuilt to the tune of $2,800, including new E12 pistons and head machining by Autosport Seattle. In addition to what is listed in the online restoration diary, I had a fresher 4-speed transmission and clutch swapped in (throw-out bearing does make some noise) and the brakes sorted in 2002 (note: this was 10 years ago) and replaced the windshield gaskets and bead, front and back, in 2008. And the clock works! Now for the negatives about this car. It appears to have been hit on the driver's side and subsequently repaired. This happened before I bought the car. There is filler visible on the driver's side and a bubble-crack is showing on the driver's-side door. There is rust on the passenger side rocker panel just in front of the rear wheel. I don't know the extent of the rust but it doesn't look good (see photo). It could require a simple patch or it might require more intensive body restoration work. There is rust in the spare tire/wheel well. It has perforated the sheet metal in places. There are dents and paint loss to the nose behind the front bumper. There are rust bubbles on the lips of the rear wheel arches on both sides of the car. The car has been repainted at least once, probably in the 1990s. The door panels need new backer boards. The door and window seals need to be replaced and the exterior door handles are missing their seals. The upper and lower dash pieces are cracked. The steering could be tighter. There are also a number of small annoyances that need to be addressed. One headlight is dimmer than the other, the fog lights no longer turn on, the blinker indicator blinks once and then stops, the antenna is loose, an exhaust bracket occasionally vibrates and there are other minor things that a shade tree mechanic could solve in a weekend or two. In other words, this is a driver, not a show car. It is 40 years old and not restored -- not a car for a nitpicker. But I think it has great restoration potential if you want to invest the money to rehabilitate the body. It has valid Washington registration and a clean South Carolina title. I bought it to drive, and I love driving it, but that's the extent of my relationship with the car. I drive it but no longer tinker with it and I leave the maintenance to the pros. I haven't gone over this car with a fine-tooth comb. When it broke down, I had it repaired. I am neither a mechanic nor a car expert by any stretch of the imagination. I am deeply familiar with the history of the 02 series, but as for this car, it is my driver, not my obsession. I am intent on not misrepresenting the car in any way, but I can't tell you what I don't know. I strongly suggest you have an inspection performed before purchasing. Don't hesitate to ask any questions you may have. But please, serious buyers only. Thanks for checking it out.On Mar-19-12 at 11:31:55 PDT, seller added the following information: Here's video of the engine starting cold for those who were interested: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bOAMPHXSd-Y
