THE "SHO" HAD A LIMITED PRODUCTION OF JUST OVER 10,021 UNITS PRODUCED. THE CRITICS LOVED THE CAR BUT THE PRICE POINT FORD SET TO COMPETE WITH MERCEDES AND BMW WAS MUCH HIGHER THAN THE AMERICAN PUBLIC WAS WILLING TO PAY. THIS "SHO" IS A ONE OWNER, SEBRING, FLORIDA CAR WITH AN "AUTOCHECK" RATING OF 60 WHICH IS 50% HIGHER THAN WHAT IT TAKES TO BE CONCIDERED AN EXCELLENT VEHICLE AND COMPARES WITH WHAT A NICE 2004-2006 QUALITY CAR WOULD RATE. THE AUTOMOBILE HAS BEEN DRIVEN JUST OVER 5,250 MILES PER YEAR BY IT'S SENIOR OWNER. A TOTAL OF 78,768 MILES. IT IS FINISHED IN VIBRANT WHITE CLEARCOAT. THE PAINT IS ALL ORIGINAL AND IS IN GREAT SHAPE IF THE CAR WERE A 2010. AND IT IS A 1997. THE SAME MAY BE SAID FOR THE INTERIOR WHICH IS LISTED AS MEDIUM GRAPHITE IN THE FORD NOMENCLATURE. The 3.4 L SHO V8 was introduced in the spring of 1996. It incorporated many of the traits of the SHO V6, including the aluminum cylinder head man and 4-valve per cylinder dual overhead cam design with a Cosworth racing manufactured aluminum block. A chain is also used to time the camshafts to crankshaft instead of the belts that the SHO V6s used. The SHO V8 has a split port style intake valve setup. The primary valve is exposed all the time and has the fuel injector spraying on it, while the secondary valve is only exposed when the Intake Runner Manifold Control opens the secondary plates at 3400 rpm. Power was similar too, at 235 hp (175 kW) and 230 lb·ft (312 N·m) of torque. Bore and stroke are 82.4 mm and 79.5 mm, respectively. The 60° angle makes it very compact and more suitable for transverse mounting. Manufacturing was also a shared process. Ford manufactured the aluminum engine blocks, using a patented Cosworth process, at their Windsor, Onterio plant, then shipped them to Japan for finishing by Yamaha. The finished engines were shipped back to the Taurus plant in Atlanta, Georgia for installation in specially prepared bodies. Starting in 1996, the SHO was redesigned. Unlike its predecessors, this SHO was more refined and used less radical bodywork. It differed from the normal Taurus with different leather fitted seats, special alloy whees, moulded bumpers, HD suspension components and even high speed wiper system that keeps the blade on the windshield at high speeds. This SHO model sold in lower numbers than the previous SHO generations, with sales peaking at 10,000 units in 1997. As a result, Ford cut the SHO when redesigning the Taurus for its fourth generation. It was also the only Ford Taurus generation with a V8 engine. The 1997 and later models got the AX4N transmission, which has the same gearsets (and thus the same gear ratios) as the AX4S used in the 1993 to 1995 SHO, but had improved torque capacity and shift quality, such as 3-2 downshifts. Bore and stroke are 82.4 mm and 79.5 mm, respectively. The 60° angle makes it very compact and more suitable for transverse mounting.
Manufacturing was also a shared process. Ford manufactured the aluminum engine blocks, using a patented Cosworth process, at their Windsor, Onterio plant, then shipped them to Japan for finishing by Yamaha. The finished engines were shipped back to the Taurus plant in Atlanta, Georgia for installation in specially prepared bodies.
Starting in 1996, the SHO was redesigned. Unlike its predecessors, this SHO was more refined and used less radical bodywork. It differed from the normal Taurus with different leather fitted seats, special alloy whees, moulded bumpers, HD suspension components and even high speed wiper system that keeps the blade on the windshield at high speeds. This SHO model sold in lower numbers than the previous SHO generations, with sales peaking at 10,000 units in 1997. As a result, Ford cut the SHO when redesigning the Taurus for its fourth generation. It was also the only Ford Taurus generation with a V8 engine. The 1997 and later models got the AX4N transmission, which has the same gearsets (and thus the same gear ratios) as the AX4S used in the 1993 to 1995 SHO, but had improved torque capacity and shift quality, such as 3-2 downshifts.
