SUMMARY AND WHY THE 1980 911 WAS THE TURNING POINT WITH MANY IMPROVEMENTS ENGINE The 1980 engines were 'optimized', to use the factory's description. The improvements that led to an extra 8bhp in Rest of the World markets were revised ignition and camshaft timing, a tightening of design tolerances in certain areas of the engine, and an increase in compression ratio to 8.6:1. As well as more power, there was a claimed 10 per cent improvement in fuel consumption.
