1997 Land Rover Discovery SE7 Complete car for parts or repair VIN SALJY1242VA717593 Exterior Alpine White Interior Saddle Leather Motor 4.0 L V8 Gearbox 3-Speed Automatic Odometer 120,145 mi. Exterior Condition Good (3-) Interior Condition Good (3) Motor Poor (5) Transmission Very Good (3+) Braking Very Good (2-) Suspension/ Very Good (2) Tires/wheels Excellent (2+) DISCOVER A DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH. In 1994 (sold as a 1995 model) the US was introduced to the Land Rover Discovery. Like its more established sibling, the Range Rover, it featured a long list of creature comforts combined with legendary off-road capabilities but at a more approachable price. The Discovery also brought unique features such as dual removable sunroofs and hand-holds integrated into the seats (adding a little more security to rear-seat passengers than the typical ceiling-mounted oh-s**t handles of other SUVs). This car was purchased at an auction under greenlight conditions, in other words, clear title, no known problems, etc. In transit, the engine suddenly overheated, was parked to let cool, but overheated again soon after returning to the road. It was towed the rest of the way home and parked where you see it pictured today. It’s a good candidate to repair and with the exception of a few easily replaceable parts, the car is complete and a motherlode of parts which can be used for another project or resold for a dazzling profit. This is the sought-after SE7 model that has the auxiliary seating to accommodate seven passengers with safety belts. It also includes the hard-to-find fluted 5-spoke 16" alloy wheels shod with practically brand new Pirelli Scorpion tires. It has its original Land Rover-branded Clarion AM/FM/cassette player and vinyl spare-tire cover as well as a complete set of books. OVERALL CONDITION Let’s start with the bad news. The motor will start and turn over but runs very poorly. Compression is low, but the bottom end is fine, retaining all the oil. It needs a new head gasket, but then there’s the source of the problem which is the overheating. There is no coolant left in the reservoir so it’s either a leaky reservoir (common problem) or a leaky radiator (also common problem). Relatively easy repairs. The good news is that if you choose to repair it, you’ll have a solid drivetrain that, when properly maintained, will last a lifetime. Aside from the mechanical issues and the obvious damage to the right front corner, the car is in decent shape. The body is exceptionally straight with zero rust, no dings and only minor chips and scratches. To make it perfect, it would need a respray to even out the color, but fine as is for a utility or sport vehicle. The interior is nice as well, the leather shows some wear but there are no rips or cracks. The dashboard is excellent. The wood veneer has some fading in spots but none of the typical cracking you see in these Land Rovers. Carpets are clean and—another rarity—the headliner has NO sagging is is very clean. Power windows and sunroof all work. All instruments work. The SE7 jumpseats are in excellent condition and are complete with safety belts. Glass all around is excellent with no cracks, chips or pitting. Rubber is excellent with no leaks even under downpour conditions. Tires are virtually new with close to 100% tread (blue dot hasn't even rubbed off yet). Wheels show no rash, fading, peeling or other blems. It’s a car that will bring someone a lot of pleasure or a lot of money, depending on what you choose to do with it. Please let me know if you have any questions and I'll do my best to answer them.
