November 28, 1994, Bruton Smith announced plans to build a multi-million dollar speedway in the Dallas/ Ft. Worth area. Smith was the principle partner in Speedway Motorsports Inc., which also owned race tracks in Atlanta, Charlotte, and Bristol. The primary focus of this facility was NASCAR racing. Construction began August 18,1995, and the project was completed in 1997. Since its' inception, the track has been managed by legendary race promoter Eddie Gossage. The track is a 1.5 mile quad oval with 24* banking. The first NASCAR event held at the track was the currently named Nationwide Series on April 5, 1997. Long time star Mark Martin won that event. The next afternoon, on April 6, Jeff Burton won his first Cup series race before a standing room only crowd of over 200,000 fans. Currently, Texas Motor Speedway hosts two Truck Series races, two Nationwide series races, and two Sprint Cup races per year. The most recent Sprint Cup series winner was Matt Kenseth, April 9, 2011. The next Sprint Cup race is set for November 6, the most heated point in the battle for the championship. For the inaugural race, the 1997 Z28 30th Anniversary Edition convertible was chosen. This Camaro was also the Pace Car of choice for the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis. Approximately 100 Brickyard editions were manufactured. Only 42 Texas Motor Speedway editions were manufactured, making this version even rarer than the highly desirable Indy Camaro. The color scheme was a throwback to the wildly popular 1969 Pace Car. It was truly a work of art, and caught the eye of collectors and Camaro enthusiasts worldwide. All original body panels and components.
