***RARE RARE RARE*** 1987 HONDA CRX CONVERTIBLE Up for auction is a very rare 1987 Honda CRX convertible. Honda made a CRX convertible? Well, not exactly, R. Straman Builders made about 400 CRX convertibles. Their badge is on the side of the car. Straman was the preeminent convertible converion company in the 1990's. How many CRX convertibles are left? I doubt very many. I bought this car last May and have put about 3000 miles on it. The elderly gentleman I bought it from had bought it from his brother from California. I planned on restoring it, but drove it more than worked on it, so it's up for sale now. Obviously the car looks great, especially considering it's almost 25 years old. It's not perfect, it does have a couple of stress cracks in the plastic and just a little rust starting, but it still shines up nicely. The CRX starts easy, idles well, drives good and stops like it should. The previous owner replaced the carb and vacuum hoses because the CRX was stalling on him......actually it just needed a fuel filter replacement. Anyway, it runs fine now and shifting is nice and tight. It does need a battery from sitting so long since it won't hold it's charge. The biggest issue facing the car is frame stiffeners have rusted causing the doors not to fit properly due to body sag. So, the new owner will definitely want to address that. It was like that when I bought it, but should really be fixed. It was due for the timing belt/water pump maintenance after I got it so that was done. For some reason the temp gauge tells me the car runs hot, but it doesn't feel hot under the hood, and the auto fan doesn't go on till the gauge reads about 3/4 hot. I'm guessing either the radiator should have been flushed when the water pump was done or there is air in the system. I still drive it but want the new owner to be aware of this. The glass is excellent. Tires are excellent. The lights and blinkers work. Even the stock radio works! The top is in excellent condition. You'll see in one of the pics the brake light is on, that's the emergency brake.....no idiot lights are on. All in all, the car does need some work, but considering the rarity of this one, it's condition, I'd say it's definitely a worthwhile project. Oh yes, and the car gets about 40mpg on the highway and it's very peppy! What a great car! Please make sure your finances are in order prior to bidding and please read the terms and conditions below. Thank you! TERMS AND CONDITIONS: By bidding on the vehicle, you are agreeing to the following terms. Time is of the essence. Date of sale will be the date the auction ends. Cashier's check must clear my bank prior to picking up the vehicle. I will answer all questions prior to auction end and after initial deposit is received. Please don't ask for any exceptions and thanks for reading and following the rules. PLEASE NOTE! If you have less than 10 feedback, please don't bid. Ebay has had a lot of problems with low feedback bidders not paying for items won. I reserve the right to cancel any bid. Sorry, but ebay is not free for sellers. Thanks. On Sep-05-11 at 07:29:20 PDT, seller added the following information: Vehicle/Auction notes: I've received a few questions and would like to answer them here. Straman was the preeminent CONVERSION (not converion) car company of the 1980's (not 1990's). Wow, only took me 3 sentences to make 2 mistakes! Anyway, thanks for the http://www.redpepperracing.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=42018&hl=straman link, seems like there aren't too many of these left. Worth a look if you are interested in the car. OK, now some questions answered. The doors sag because the frame/unibody needs work not because the doors need adjustment. This makes the doors very hard to close and will become more serious as time goes by if not repaired. Rust never sleeps 'ya know. I believe it would need to be professionally repaired unless you are a gifted welder. I've had quite a few responses to hot temp issue and I'd like to thank all who took time to respond. Apparently it's not uncommon for these cars, and some of the solutions were replace the radiator cap, flush or replace the radiator, change the temp sensors, vent the air out, change the heater core and finally change the temp gauge. The car has an Illinois title, properly signed off May 2010. The new owner can fill out his info right on the title which doubles as a bill of sale. Now, I get a lot of questions like, "can I drive it across the country". Can I recommend driving the car instead of having it transported? No I can't. Before you book a flight, take time off work, book hotels, etc, check out how much it costs to get the car transported.....you might be surprised. Plus, a little piece of mind. I was able to get the CRX insured as a collector car through Grundy for about $10/ month which valued the car at $5,000. Missing the center vent as seen in the pics. The emergency brake does work. Oh, and finally, the snaps on the dash are for a cockpit cover which I did not include in the sale because its location escapes me. Good luck bidding.
