Vehicle Detail

Not Many if Any 1980 Toyota 4x4 Sport Trucks left in this condition Beautiful 1980 Toyota 4x4 Sport Truck with only 48,866 actual miles. The mileage is accurate and documented in the original owner’s log book with over 300 entries including notes for every tank of gas, oil change, tire rotation, grease job, hubs being locked and unlocked per manufacturer’s recommendation, plugs, air filter, shocks, timing check, tire purchase, fuel filter, and gas mileage calculation. I’ve never seen anyone so dedicated for record keeping who would keep track of every tank of gas from mile 198 in May of 1980 until mile 47,448 done on June 7, 2009 just weeks before the original owner’s passing. If you are interested in what the mpg numbers were for the 29 years: the low was 13 mpg and the high was 23 mpg. That’s pretty close to the EPA numbers on the original window sticker that comes with the Truck as well. Speaking of paperwork, with this truck you will get the above mentioned log book, an original sales brochure, original sales window sticker showing standard and optional equipment, new vehicle order sheet showing purchase price with receipt for deposit (dated 1/23/80), receipt from Central Toyota, Inc. for payment in full (dated 5/23/80), carbon copy of an official bank check from AmeriTrust for the cashier’s check to buy the truck (dated May 22, 1980), couple of magazine articles from 1979 and 1980 on the Toyota 4x4 saved by the original owner, and various receipts for products and services for the truck. If you are familiar with these trucks you know there are not many surviving examples in this kind of condition. To insure this truck’s survival the original owner applied some kind of grease paste all over the underside of the truck soon after he purchased it. He also injected this substance into the doors and tail gate. Additionally, he applied it to the engine compartment and under the hood. I have removed some of it from the engine compartment and hood and select areas from the underside and found that it did a great job of preservation. The truck’s paint is original and beautiful. In many regards the truck’s finish looks in showroom condition. The truck was not exposed to the elements but garage kept under a large truck cover throughout most of its lifetime. The truck cover will be included with the truck. A few chips and nicks on the body of the truck have been addressed with a bottle of Toyota touch up paint that is an excellent match will be included also. The only area where the grease paste couldn’t protect was two small rust spots under the driver’s side tie down hooks. The spots were touched up two years ago with the Toyota touch up paint and have not returned. We figured those spots were from condensation that occurred while covered during winter storage. The decal stripes are original and are in very good condition but do show their age as you would expect after 31 years. The front bumper is scratched on the passenger side corner but since it is black it is almost not noticeable. The Rhinoliner has been applied to the bed and still looks like new since the bed-cover is never removed and nothing has been carried in the bed. The roll bar and bed cover were added in September of 1980 just a few months after the truck was delivered. The truck bed cover was custom made to fit around the roll bar by Lehman Awning Co. of Massillon, OH. To give the cover a convex shape to shed water two oak bows were fitted under the cover. The cover was well made and has held up well. On December 15, 1982, the Indian Blanket Seat Cover was purchased for the truck. When the seat cover was removed in September of 2009, the original owner’s widow stated that she had never seen the cover off of the seat. The Indian Blanket cover did a great job of protecting the seat and preserving it all these years. The driver’s side vinyl has cracked but the rest of the vinyl and all of the fabric is in excellent condition. I would be reluctant to have it replaced since it is only original once. Maintenance and service on the truck in the past two years include the following: New tires (BFG All Terrain), shocks (Bilstein), and steering stabilizer (Monroe) & alignment Powder coated wheels and roll bar New powder coated rear bumper New front brake rotors & brake pads, rear drum adjustment, new brake fluid Repack bearings and replace grease seals Transmission gear oil replaced Cylinder head removed and machined due to stuck exhaust valve, new head bolts Cooling system flushed with new coolant added with pressure testing, new thermostat New spark plugs, ignition rotor, spark plug wires, fuel pump, and distributor cap New muffler and exhaust pipe All new vacuum hoses Carb cleaned and diaphragms replaced Timing set EGR valve has been capped and the catalytic converter was removed 20 years ago. All other emissions equipment is still in place. (if your state requires emissions testing you will need a new EGR valve and a catalytic converter) The options for the factory “Sport Truck” are: 3 color sport stripe, Am/FM Stereo Radio, Tachometer & Trip meter, Amp/oil pressure gauge console, padded wheel & shift knob, durable plush-pile carpet, full tinted glass, 3 color knot cloth vinyl seat, and wood grain instrument panel. Optional equipment included: All weather guard package, window package (sliding rear window and vent windows), Tilt wheel, power steering, tailgate panel, and ultra mirrors. The 4x4 has a hi4 and low4 option with manual locking hubs. The 4x4 system is in excellent condition. The factory radio still works. The truck does not have A/C. According to the window sticker it was order without it. The very rare Toyota 4x4 floor mats are also included. The truck is only taken out on special occasions and is a blast to drive. It travels straight down the interstate at 65 to 70 mph without a problem. It does not smoke or leak. It has no overheating problems and the new brakes stop it in a straight line every time. Basically it runs as nice as it looks. It is difficult to go to the gas station without getting into a conversation about this truck. Most people think that it is restoration when they see it and are amazed when they find out that it is basically original with only 48,000 miles. On a recent drive to the local hardware store an uninformed passerby commented on the nice looking “new” Toyota truck. It is very difficult to capture the significance of this truck in photos. This may indeed be one of the last surviving examples of its kind in this condition. To view more photos of this rare example I have included a link: http://s932.photobucket.com/albums/ad169/dddrdoc/First%20Generation%20Toyota%204x4/ I am listing this truck for my uncle who is the second owner. He purchased the truck from the original owner’s widow in August of 2009. I have sold many vehicles out of my uncle’s collection and have never had anyone disappointed with their purchase. He tends to have only the best as evidenced by this truck and is very meticulous about their care and maintenance. The truck is being sold without a warranty and is being offered in an “as is condition”. Please remember that as nice as this truck looks and drives it is still over 30 years old. With that said, I would not hesitate to drive this truck home after purchasing. Shipping will be the buyer’s responsibility. No feedback bidders will have to contact me before bidding to keep from having their bids canceled. All technical questions regarding the truck will be handled by my uncle. I will provide you with his contact information so you can discuss the particulars with him. If you choose the “Buy it Now” option an immediate nonrefundable $500 deposit is required. This is done to prevent mischief that I have encountered before. The truck is located near Greenville, SC (Simpsonville 29680) and can be shown on any day. A personal inspection is recommended. Unless sold beforehand, the truck will be on display at the Antique & Classic car show in Simpsonville on Labor Day. If you are a Toyota vintage truck enthusiast you will not want to miss out on this one. In my opinion this is a once in a lifetime opportunity.
