Vehicle Detail
Offered for sale is in incredible 28k mile example of a 1978 Mercedes 450SL (R107) finished in rare Brilliant Red (brillantrot, DB 525) over parchment interior. This car is truly the proverbial “little old lady’s” car, but this one spent its entire life in Orange County instead of Pasadena. The original and only owner purchased the car new for his wife and it was always used sparingly, properly garaged and maintained fanatically, as is evidenced by a thick folder on the car consisting of service receipts, books and manuals and even the original sales contract. In absolutely beautiful condition, this is certainly one of the finest R107 bodied SLs on the market. The car’s finish is excellent, deep lustrous and, as the pictures exhibit, free of any significant imperfections. All of the panel fits are factory perfect, the glass and rubber are in excellent condition and the chrome is gorgeous. The aluminum wheels are in perfect condition and are wrapped in tires with plenty of remaining tread. The car’s interior is equally clean. The parchment leather seats are impeccable, offsetting the exterior beautifully. The dash and interior panels are excellent and the carpets are in great shape. PLEASE NOTE: the car had just been detailed when photographed and the carpets had been shampooed, hence their appearance in the pictures. The have no stains or, wear or holes. The black canvas soft top is original and in excellent condition, and the hardtop is as well, kept stored since new. The car has its original working Becker Mexico radio as well as working air conditioning, something difficult to find in this era SL. As we mentioned above, the car has always been well maintained, which is immediately evident upon getting behind the wheel. The car starts without any smoke, idles consistently and pulls strongly and smoothly through all of the gears. Whether tooling around town, cruising down Highway 1 or bombing down the Autobahn at 120MPH, the car is a joy to drive – smooth, comfortable and above all else, possessing the tightness and rock-solid stability that Mercedes was known for. The car just feels well engineered. And God forbid, but I don’t envy anyone driving the other car were you ever to get into an accident. This is an incredible “time-capsule” documented low mileage example finished in a rare and desirable color combination in the right condition. To use the colloquialism, “they just don’t build them like this anymore” and finding examples as fine as this is becoming increasingly difficult. Bid accordingly. We want this car to go to a great home, so please feel free to email me or give us a call at (805) 886-1823 or (805) 708-2404 if you have any additional questions. Thanks for your interest. Please visit us online at Goodman Reed. GOODMAN REED MOTORCARS While I have a California dealer license, I’m not your typical dealer. I’ve always had an appreciation for classic cars and have always bought and sold them to create a kind of very small revolving personal collection, which, up until this posting, has contained the Mercedes you’re currently looking at. I try to give accurate descriptions of the cars I’m selling, but I’m not an expert and I encourage and am happy to help facilitate personal or professional inspections. But please do so before bidding, as the alternative harms my ability to make sales with other interested parties who have done their proper due diligence before bidding. For U.S. buyers a 10% non-refundable deposit is required within 3 days of the auction's end, the balance to be paid within 7 days of the auction's end. Foreign buyers must pay in full within 7 business days of auction’s end. Buyer is responsible for shipping, however I'd be more than happy to help with recommendations and arrangements. The car is listed locally and I reserve the right to end the auction at any time should it sell prior to auction's end. Thanks for your interest.
