Only three companies entered, Bantam, Willy-Overland, and Ford.... Willys eventually won the main contract. The military Jeep was conceived in 1940, serving the U.S. military and many other armies worldwide. The pickup truck versions for civilian and military use was (based on the full-size SJ Wagoneer/Cherokee) was called the Gladiator, J-10, and J-20, they were produced from 1963 to 1987. From 1967 to 1969 Jeep also produced the M715, a 1-1/4 ton militarized J-Series utility truck. While it was made for only three years, it saw a lot of service in that time mostly overseas. The Jeep pickup design was noteworthy for being in production for more than 26 years with only minor mechanical changes. In the Air Force the J20 was used for a variety of jobs from carring tools & spare truck parts for repairs, to getting in and out of off road situations and as an ambulance stocked with medical supplies.Our Jeep J20 is in good condition considering it's age and is used lightly around the farm. The tires are good with about 65% tread left. Run's healthy and drives great with no problems or issues to be found, a strong and quiet motor, smooth shifting transmission and good brackes. The Carborator was rebuilt 1 year ago. The underbody is orginal the outside is a military gray/green. Latches and handles work Inside interior is blue. Needs a good cleaning but seats are in good shape. Floor boards are solid.
