ATTENTION COLLECTORS!! This is #7 of the 1986 production (only produced 2 years for the U.S. – 1985 and 1986) of the Honda VF1000R Superbike. If you are looking at this ad, you already know what this is. I had searched a long time for a candidate to be refurbished and as you can expect, most found are in really rough shape. I bought this bike off Ebay in 2006 from the 2nd owner. The story was that his close friend bought it new in 1986 and he asked him that if he were to ever sell it, he would buy it. Well….I guess he finally obtained it, rode it for a while and then stored it in his own basement, which is where I found it. I brought the bike home and began going through everything it needed. It has been a painful and expensive process since there are not very many parts in the condition I was looking for. As I quickly learned, any parts for these bikes which are in good shape…. everybody wants them and they are willing to pay top dollar to get them. I want to make one thing clear, this has NOT been a frame off restoration. It has been a detailed refurbish with everything serviced, cleaned or replaced with all NOS or original equipment whenever possible. This bike still has the original finish and paint and does have it share of small scratches. The pictures always make vehicles look better than in person. It is a 25 year old motorcycle, so please do not expect a new bike finish. As best as I can tell, the paint is all original except for the front forks and the wheels. I repainted the forks using the Colorite system and it is as near a perfect match as one could get. They were too chipped up for my liking so it was either a repaint or find another set with good paint. The wheels were very dull, so they were bead blasted, primed and repainted the original gloss black. They came out really nice. I have put less than 2,000 miles on it since I have owned it and I would like a collector or a vintage enthusiast to own it. It is deceptively fast and can get you in trouble real quick. It is almost too fast for the stock suspension and it makes me wonder about those who used to race these 25 years ago. I am a 50 year old adult that just enjoys bringing these old special bikes back to life and I spare no expense to keep them as original and safe as possible. I have had the bike up to 125 mph to assure there was no high speed wobbles or vibrations. All I can say, is that once you tuck down behind that bubble fairing, it is a smooth as silk. I saw 125 and there was still a fist full of throttle left. The only item which I have not replaced is the lower fairing which has a crack in the bottom of it, but is not visible until you take it off. I would have bought another one, but in five years have not seen another one as good as mine. The seat fiberglass cowl, is from a 1985 which I did not realize until I last posted the bike and someone clarified that for me. That is why the stripes do not line up at the rear. I do have the original which is in very good shape except it has a crack on one side. It will go with the bike. I also have another set of gauges that I bought just for the ring which goes around the speedometer, but I never replaced it. The ring has crimp in it. It had small ding in it when I got it and I thought I could straighten it out, but I just made it worse. The gauges will go with the bike as well. Since much of the bike is original, there are the usual light scratches here and there from years of use, but no show stoppers. The bike shows great. I had rebuilt the first set of carbs and ran those until I came across a set of newly rebuilt ones from a business that rebuilds vintage carbs from the west coast. They ran great. The other carbs will also go with the bike. It is now just beginning to get a hesitation on the low end and a little hard to start from sitting, only when it is cold. I stored it with fuel stabilizer and let it run for 30 minutes before putting it away in November 2010. I am sure with a few miles of fuel system cleaner, they will be like new again. That is one of the reasons for selling it. It is not being run enough and I don’t want to see it go the other way. I would like to do another project, but must sell this bike first. Bike currently has 27,154 miles on it. As you can imagine, I cannot allow any test rides, because if you drop it, there is no replacing it. Money at that point will do neither one of us any good. I have attached my entire diary of the refurbishment. There is nothing to hide and I ask that all interested parties read it in great detail to appreciate what I have done. Only serious buyers need apply. I am very well versed in scams and will ignore all of those that appear to be. I have been told that I go overboard with my descriptions, but I myself do not like surprises. I would actually prefer you come see it before buying it, but don’t waste my time. Everyone want’s to see things, but at the last minute they change their minds and do not call! I have decided to part with it at no reserve auction. The highest bidder gets it. Transportation is your issue, not mine. I will not crate or ship or delivery to terminal. Payment must be in the form of cash only, there are too many fake money orders out there. If you can pay cash for the money order, you can pay cash to me.
