Vehicle Detail
I have been on the fence about selling this car but it's time. These were only offered in Black, Red, Silver, and White. The White on blue interior with a sunroof is the best combination in my opinion. I am describing the car to the best of my ability and representing it the best I can. If you have any questions feel free to call me. I have driven the car less than 1500 miles since I have owned it (2 years). It has been sitting in a heated warehouse most of my ownership. I purchased this car from a very good friend that had it for 13 years. You might be weary that the car is located in Michigan but that should not be a concern for you. This car has never seen a winter and from the looks of it, has always been parked inside. This is one of the cleanest original paint MK1's I have come across. Keep in mind the car is 27 years old and is not perfect. THE DRIVE When I purchased the car I had it totally gone through by a local mechanic that I trust as I was busy and did not have the time to do it myself. A new clutch was installed, new cap, rotors, plugs, fuel pump, fuel lines etc to be a nice running car. The plan was to daily drive this car in the summer. I had all this work performed and then never really drove it. I installed Goodyear Performance rain tires on it this week and they have less than 10 miles on them ($130 a tire). I believe tires that perform well in wet conditions are important for a daily driver that is this lightweight. This GTI starts, drives, brakes, shifts and cruises along just as it should. The car does have one issue that should be taken care of. When the fuel gets down below 3/4 of a tank it sometimes hesitates on right turns. This is very common in the MK1's as a baffle in the fuel tank comes loose and sucks for air...only on RH turns. New fuel tanks are $62.04 at www.carpartswholesale.com and include this integral baffle. The car is still very driveable this way but this should be addressed at some point. The fuel gauge also reads full all the time, I am guessing this is the sender in the tank. Again, Keep in mind it is a 27 year old car that has been driven very little. BODY Body is straight and there has been no paint work done to it to the best of my knowledge. The paint is not dull or oxidized. The passenger door has 3 very very small dings. There is a VERY VERY light crease near the fuel filler, unnoticeable in most lighting conditions. (see pic) Crank sunroof works perfectly and does not leak. The only spot of rust that I can find on the car is the rear apron on the RH side. (see photos) The floorboards and under-pan are free of rust and still have the factory undercoating on them. The front RH fender has a small imperfection. The previous owner had a friend just barely touch the plastic wheel arch when backing up. The paint cracked and there is some light surface rust where this happened. The plastic arch covers this so it is not a huge concern but I want to point out everything. (see very last photo below) The front "GTI" badge is not on the grill and I do not have it. Rear badges are in great shape. Wheels are not perfect but very nice for being original. Bumpers have been resprayed satin black and they look nice. INTERIOR The interior is pretty clean for a MK1. The bolsters on the front seats almost always show wear and split open on the GTI's. These seats do not show wear and are in amazing shape. The flip down lever for access to the rear seat does not work on the drivers seat. The carpets are okay, the drivers side has a good amount of wear near the pedals. Passenger floor shows some light soiling. I have not yet attempted to steam clean/extract any of the carpets. I think this would remove most of the soiling you see . (see photo) Dash has no cracks, all gauges work except the fuel gauge as mentioned above. The original rubber shift boot is cracked.(I have never seen one that wasn't) Rear seat is in nice shape but not installed in the car. There is so much more room without the rear seat. (see photo) There is an aftermarket stress bar across the rear shock towers (see pic) The headliner is sagging down and needs to be replaced. A previous owner has stapled it back up. All glass is good and original VW. The only speaker that seems to work is the front left. ENGINE COMPARTMENT The compartment is very clean. There is 0 rust on the shock towers and front frame rails. The internals of the motor are stock. Every once in a while I will get a few drips of oil on the ground. I believe the oil pan gasket is the issue here. I cleaned the pan with brake cleaner last week to find the leak and it is seeping out in one area on the pan. The engine burns no oil. The previous owner added a catch can for the crankcase breather so the intake components did not get coated in an oily residue. (that is the canister you see on the lookers left of the engine bay) The car originally had AC (I was told this is rare to have a sunroof as well, I'm not sure) The compressor, condensor and hoses are gone and I do not have them. The evaporator & dash controls etc are still there so this could be hooked back up in the future if you desire. The car has a techtonics exhaust and a European exhaust manifold and down pipe which is a great combination for a stock 8 valve. It sounds very nice. (no cat) There is an aftermarket upper and lower stress bar in the front. It sits on H&R springs and I believe Boge shocks that were installed 7-8 years ago by the guy I purchased it from. It's a beautiful car and fairly unmolested for a 27 year old GTI. I had plans to bring this car 100% back to stock, which would not take much effort but I don't have time for it right now. Please take note that this is an older car and is not perfect. The car has spent most of its life being stored so it's possible things will arise that I am not aware of. Please do not place a bid on the car if you do not have the money right now, right this minute. Too many times I have bidders say "my wife said I can't" or "I was supposed to sell my other car this week to get the money" etc. Make sure your whole entire family is okay with you buying a 27 year old VW before bidding. I no longer live in Michigan and I'm here visiting family and do not have any time to waste by a bidder that does not pull through. I do not mean to sound rude but you would be surprised at how many bidders never pull through. This is an auction and a LEGAL CONTRACT. The winning bidder buys the car. Please feel free to check out the car before you bid. I would prefer you see and touch what you are getting. I am not trying to hide anything. Come over here with a comb if you want. I want the buyer to see exactly what they are getting. I am willing to take additional photos if you do not see something you want to above. Do not show up here after winning and say it's not what you want. I am giving you every opportunity to check it out. SERIOUS BIDDERS ONLY please. CAR IS LOCATED IN Rockford, Michigan about 20 minutes north of Grand Rapids, MI. feel free to call my cell phone at 616-334-5337 or use the "ask seller a question" feature above. Good luck !
