Vehicle Detail
1968 Chevrolet Camaro This is a beautiful 1968 Chevrolet Camaro Rally Sport. This car was purchased by my father in approximately 1993 from a guy or guys just north of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The car was purchased at the Canfield Swap Meet. The car, when my father purchased it was painted as you see it today. I will try my best to describe the car, but unfortunately, my father who did most of the work and knew the car the best passed away in 2006. Before my father bought the car it had been off of the road since 1984 or so. My father put it back on the road around 2000. The engine is the original, numbers matching, never restamped 327 cubic inch 4bbl, 275hp (RPO L30). The transmission is a Saginaw 4 speed manual which is not original to the car, but is of the type that would have originally been found behind an L30. The rear axle is believed to be original and I believe it is a posi, but I really can’t recall. I have included the glass codes below. I believe the glass to be original to the car. The cowl tag is original. The engine, as I stated is original, the transmission is not. The intake appears original by the date code and casting number. The starter does not appear to be original. It is unknown whether or not the steering gear is original. The alternator is not original, nor is the water pump. The radiator may be original, but it was re-cored. Here are some specifics: Codes: VIN - 124378N442443 Cowl Tag 05D ST 68 12437 NOR 142396 TR 712 UU PNT Engine Front Pad - 18N442443 V0520EA Engine Casting Number – 3914678 Engine Casting Date – E158 - The arrow points to the 7th dot on the clock if you count the top dot as number 1. Intake – Casting Number – 391980 3 GM4 Casting Date – E138 Starter – 1107242 1M29 Steering Box – 5679142 X135 Side Cover – 7802287 C.R.C. 17 Rear End – 3894860NF H17 7 CONI Glass codes – All Glass is “LOF” Driver Door – Safety Flo-Lite AS-2 LX Solid Tempered M71 Driver Quarter – Safety Plate AS2 JX Solid Tempered M52 Passenger Door – Safety Flo-Lite AS-2 LX Solid Tempered M71 Passenger Quarter – Safety Plate AS-2 GX M52 Rear Window – Safety Flo-Lite AS-2 XX Solid Tempered M72 Windshield – Safety Plate AS-1 JX Laminated M3 Wiper Motor – 5C45441 Type E 12V Engine: The engine is the original, numbers matching engine. The displacement of the engine is 327 cubic inches. It has a remanufactured (by Holley) Rochester Quadra-Jet 4bbl carburetor. The cylinder heads are not original to the car but were rebuilt during my father’s ownership. A new cam shaft (nothing radical, but a nice street cam) was installed when the cylinder heads were reinstalled after rebuilding. This is the same time that the newly remanufactured carburetor was installed. The exhaust manifolds are not original, but are of the type originally found on this engine. The car has dual aluminized exhaust, 2” diameter I believe. The engine was rebuilt prior to my dad buying the car. The engine is 0.030 overbored. It is unknown when the engine was rebuilt. Transmission: The transmission is a Saginaw 4spd. The transmission is not original to the car and was purchased by my father when the transmission in the car when he bought it started acting up (this transmission wasn’t the original one either). The transmission currently in the car was sold to my father by a man in Cambria County, Pennsylvania who stated that it was rebuilt. Removal of the side cover appeared to verify that it was rebuilt as there was no evidence of the transmission ever having oil in it and none of the gears appeared worn. The transmission in the car works perfectly and shifts nicely. There is no reason therefore to believe that it wasn’t rebuilt prior to my dad buying it. Suspension: In the mid/late 1990s my father rebuilt the entire suspension and steering components (with the exception of the steering box). The A-arms were completely disassembled and rebushed, the rear springs were replaced as was the front steering components (again with the exception of the steering box.) The car has four wheel manual drum brakes and manual steering. Wheels: The car has Boyd Coddington 15”x7” (4” backspacing) polished billet aluminum wheels. The tires are Cooper Cobra Radial GT raised white letter tires that were bought in 2008. Interior & Misc: The interior is standard black bucket seats with center console. The front seats were recovered during my father’s ownership. I don’t know that the rear seat was recovered. I think it’s still got the original cover on it. The dash pad was replaced during my father’s ownership. The car has an aftermarket “Custom Audio Sound” AM/FM radio in the stock location. The heater works, but the arm for the defroster is broken. The windshield wipers work but the squirters are not hooked up and therefore do not work. I don’t know why the washer squirters are not hooked up. Speedometer and Odometer haven’t been working for the last 3 years, not sure why. Roughly 2500 miles have been put on the car since. Body: The car is supposed to be Lemans Blue. I don’t know if the paint on the car is actually Lemans Blue or not because my father didn’t own it when it was painted. The color appears to be Lemans Blue. My father was told that the paint is base-clear. The paint is in really nice condition. There is no evidence of previous accident damage and there is no rust either underneath of the car or on the body of the car. Being off the road for 15 years or so really helped this car. The car has been garaged the entire time my father owned and since his death in 2006. The car is an original Rally Sport. The headlight doors do not work … how many of them still do? All of the lights with the exception of the reverse lights work. There is no reverse switch or neutral safety switch installed. The cowl hood is not original to this car, but it does appear to be an original GM cowl hood. The rear spoiler is also not believed to be original to this car. Both of these items were on the car when my dad bought it. Although I enjoy this car, it is time to sell it. I don’t drive it as much as I would like and I am not really a car guy. My brother helped me write this description and he remembers the car and the work my dad did to it better than I do. The car was shown at the Camaros at Carlisle Show and at the Camaro Nationals on several occasions. It was last shown in Carlisle in 2008. Although it never won an award at Carlisle, it always made the 500+ mile round trip without incident and was always admired by the crowds. This car is very unique in that it is a true, confirmed L30/M20 car. Here is a link to more information concerning the L30/M20 configurations. http://www.camaros.org/l30m20.shtml This is a really nice 1968 Chevrolet Camaro RS L30/M20 car which still retains its original engine. The car sounds great and runs well. The battery was new this spring and the coolant was also replaced this spring. I have done my best to describe the car, but I make no representations or warranties regarding the car. The car is sold AS-IS, WHERE-IS. Buyer is responsible for all shipping charges. It is encouraged that you contact me to come look at the car prior to bidding on it. If you bid on this car and are the high-bidder at the end of the auction you will have purchased the car. This will constitute a legally binding contract between you and me. The car is a nice car, but it is also a 40+ year old car. The car was not rotisserie restored and is not a 100 point show car. With that said however it is a nice car which turns heads and looks great. The car is for sale locally as well. I reserve the right to end the auction at anytime.
