The difficulty is finding one in the proper condition, and having the funds to go along with the ambition. The next hang up if purchasing an original Spyder is actually driving it, having anxiety at every turn as you drive around a museum piece. Enter the Beck 550 Spyder, built by the specialists at Special Edition, Inc. in Bremen, Indiana. The builders of the Beck Spyder have over 30 years experience building, as most enthusiasts claim, the BEST replica Porsche products in the world. These are NOT restored VW's of yesteryear. These are hand-made, ground-up custom built sports cars tailor-made to the clents exact options. Beck starts with a 3" DOM tubular "purpose built" chassis, increasing rigidity and interior space, and providing the strength needed to make this car feel confident under strenuous performance. The body is then 100% hand crafted using on the best quality resin, then finished off in a Sikkens base/clear coat paint, available in a select number of colors. The suspension is complete with fully adjustable twin torsion I-beam up front, and Torsion bar with adjustable spring plates in the rear. With front disc, rear drum and handbrake on the rear wheels, this car handles and stops just how you'd hope and expect. The Beck Spyder 550 is a made-to-order fully customizable "roller", complete with everything (including a transmission) except an engine. That's where CB Performance comes into the equation. CB Performance is THE authority in performance VW engines, and have been the leader in the industry for decades. Their legendary performance building and servicing of the VW motor scene has graced the pages of enthusiast magazines, and been the premiere choice for the performance motor. Why buy this Beck 550 Spyder? Absolutely stunning, only 2400 miles, and nearly flawless. Ok, I cannot possibly list everything that I have regarding this car. Here's some important specifics: History: We took this car in on trade on a Lotus Elise from the original owner, who custom ordered this Spyder brand new. The car is built showing Kilometers, and has only 3800 (approx. 2400 miles). The original owner is a meticulous, middle aged attorney from a nearby community. Purely an enthusiast, this car was babied, never raced or tracked, and driven seldom. Condition: Inside and out, this car is nearly new. As you can imagine, 2400 miles limits the amount of wear that a car sees, especially if it's summer only, dry weather only. From top to bottm, this Spyder shows very little if any wear, and is probably as close to new as you'll find for a car built 6+ years ago. Drivability: The same as it's condition, this Spyder's drivability is top notch as well. The motor is unbelievable, the power is scary, and the steering and braking are sure-footed and capable. This car is an absolute rocket, with approximately 160 horsepower, and weighing around 1350 pounds. Totally streetable, with an incredible exhaust note and probably unlike anything you've ever driven. Performance: As mentioned, this car is extremely quick. The motor is a custom built CB Performance "turnkey" 2165cc powerplant, with nearly 160 horsepower, dual Weber Carbs, and a sound like no other. I have full build details if interested, this was a $6,000 engine when ordered, and is even more expensive now. The transmission is the "Pro Street" 4 speed manual ordered through Beck, and is perfectly matched with the performance of the engine. Options and build details: Here's where the list can get extensive, so I'll highlight some important details. This car has a Tonneau cover AND a convertible top that can be snapped on. It also has a CD player with an ipod input and speakers (relocated behind the seat after the pics were taken).This car would cost well over $40,000 to build today, and is a very well optioned Beck.
