One of the most highly publicized forms of racing that Camaros took part in was the International Race of Champions, or IROC, race series. It originated in 1973, when drivers competed in 15 identically prepared Porsche Carreras. For several reasons, including a desire to expand the series to include oval track drivers, Camaros replaced Porsches in 1974. The IROC series ran through 1980, with Roman numerals identifying each year. After the IROC VII competition in 1980, the series was dropped, but it returned in 1984 when the IROC VIII was taken by NASCAR driver Cale Yarborough. Thanks to television, the IROC series earned wide exposure and a strong link was created between the Camaro name and the IROC name. By 1985, this was strengthened even further by the release of a hot production version of the Chevy pony car called the IROC Z/28--more popularly called the "IROC-Z." The IROC-Z was actually a sport equipment package (RPO B4Z). The standard engine was Chevy's LG4 190-hp version of the 305-cid (5.0-liter) V-8. This engine used a four-barrel carburetor and developed 240 lbs.-ft of torque at 3200 rpm. A more muscular engine was available as the optional LB9 version of the 5.0-liter V-8, with electronic fuel injection and a tuned aluminum intake plenum with individual intake runners for each cylinder. This ws dubbed "tuned port injection" and was good for 215 hp at 4800 rpm and 275 lbs.-ft. of torque at 3200 rpm. The 5.0-liter H.O. engine also featured a hotter camshaft and a larger-diameter exhaust system. A 3.42:1 rear axle was standard. Other IROC-Z equipment included a lower stance and center of gravity, re-valved Delco front struts, a faster spring jounce rate, front stabilzer bar, re-calibrated performance power steering, Bilstein rear gas shocks, fatter-than-normal rear anti-roll bar and unidirectional 245/50VR16 Goodyear Eagle tires mounted on 8 x 16-inch wheels. In road tests, Motor Trend reported a 6.87-second 0-to-60 time and a 15.32-second quarter-mile run at 89.6 mph. Popular Hot Rodding took a little longer (7 seconds) to get up to 60 mph, but ran the quarter-mile in 14.94 seconds at 92.60 mph. One of the most highly publicized forms of racing that Camaros took part in was the International Race of Champions, or IROC, race series. It originated in 1973, when drivers competed in 15 identically prepared Porsche Carreras. For several reasons, including a desire to expand the series to include oval track drivers, Camaros replaced Porsches in 1974.

The IROC series ran through 1980, with Roman numerals identifying each year. After the IROC VII competition in 1980, the series was dropped, but it returned in 1984 when the IROC VIII was taken by NASCAR driver Cale Yarborough.

Thanks to television, the IROC series earned wide exposure and a strong link was created between the Camaro name and the IROC name. By 1985, this was strengthened even further by the release of a hot production version of the Chevy pony car called the IROC Z/28--more popularly called the "IROC-Z."

The IROC-Z was actually a sport equipment package (RPO B4Z). The standard engine was Chevy's LG4 190-hp version of the 305-cid (5.0-liter) V-8. This engine used a four-barrel carburetor and developed 240 lbs.-ft of torque at 3200 rpm. A more muscular engine was available as the optional LB9 version of the 5.0-liter V-8, with electronic fuel injection and a tuned aluminum intake plenum with individual intake runners for each cylinder. This ws dubbed "tuned port injection" and was good for 215 hp at 4800 rpm and 275 lbs.-ft. of torque at 3200 rpm.

The 5.0-liter H.O. engine also featured a hotter camshaft and a larger-diameter exhaust system. A 3.42:1 rear axle was standard. Other IROC-Z equipment included a lower stance and center of gravity, re-valved Delco front struts, a faster spring jounce rate, front stabilzer bar, re-calibrated performance power steering, Bilstein rear gas shocks, fatter-than-normal rear anti-roll bar and unidirectional 245/50VR16 Goodyear Eagle tires mounted on 8 x 16-inch wheels.

In road tests, Motor Trend reported a 6.87-second 0-to-60 time and a 15.32-second quarter-mile run at 89.6 mph. Popular Hot Rodding took a little longer (7 seconds) to get up to 60 mph, but ran the quarter-mile in 14.94 seconds at 92.60 mph.
