IF YOU ARE CONSIDERING PLACING A BID ON THIS CAR... THE TIME TO READ WHAT I HAVE TAKEN THE TIME TO WRITE! Up for auction is a very unique 1968 Chevrolet Monza coupe. The customization of this car began when it was purchased by Kevin, of Fletcher Jones Mercedes in Newport Beach , CA. Just as Fletcher Jones name is associated with high quality automobiles, Kevin took pride the building of his personal car. He used nothing but top quality part available at the time. Kevin had top notch professional help in the build up. Gabe Lopez fabricated the custom interior, and the mechanics were handled by Greg Peterson of Corvair Specialties and the late Tom Wright of Wright Racing (Tom's signature logo and decal is still under the deck lid). After owning and driving the car for several years Kevin decided to sell the car. Greg got first dibs and bought the car. Greg and I used to work out of adjacent garages and I bought the car from him. The car has been kept within a close circle of Corvair friends since its build up and was supposed to go to yet another buddy in our group... however for financial reasons the car is now being offered here on ebay . I myself have invested $12,000 into this car and am now willing to let it go at a huge loss! The reserve I have set for this Corvair is less than half the cost of just the Boyd wheels alone!! . I have several classic car projects and not enough money in my pockets nor enough years left in my life to possibly complete e them . INTERIOR: Much of the custom interior is custom job of Gabes Hot Rod Interiors. http://gabescustom.com/ Really cool custom handcrafted door panels with the Corvair shield embossed in the panel design. Done in leather and textile the design flows nicely from front to back seat (see pictures). It was signature craftsmanship like this that led up to Gabe Lopez becoming a household name in the car culture as well as making weekly appearances on television in the series American Hot Rod. Other notable interior pieces include Porsche seats (930 or 959 I believe) with electric/ pneumatic lumbar control, Custom Boyds polished aluminum steering wheel, Center mounted Sun tachometer, Pillar mounted head temp. gauge, B&M shifter with Corsa quick shift and a sound system that absolutely rocks, Alpine AM/FM CD receiver, Fosgate punch amp, Dual 10' punch kickers boxed, crossovers, kick panel mids, directional satellite tweeters. All the Gabes custom work is in excellent condition (door panels front and rear & dash). The sound system functions and is all there (Alpine faceplate is not shown in pictures but is included). Imperfections: The electrical to the seats was never hooked up. The seat back upper portion leather is dry cracking in some spots and needs a good conditioning . The mechanism that keeps the seats in upright position are broken on both seats. The upper back seat has a tear.(see photos) BODY IMPERFECTIONS (see photo layout): This car has been in Southern California since new, and the entire car is solid with exception of a few minor spots where Corvairs are prone to rusting from poor water drainage.... lower windshield corner & lower front corner door. The only dings on the car are the roof. The paint shines but has some dull areas. There are many small chips and scratches. Chrome is good front and rear. One tail light has center piece re-glued. The lower rear panel has minor ding. Aluminum grill insert is included but not shown in picture. Headlight bezels in great cond, emblems are excellent and non pitted. The pace car graphics are 69 Camaro Pace car decals cleverly modified, yet unique as the concept of the car itself. No, there never was a Corvair Pace Car, however if there was, I think certainly would have fit the bill. Here is such a story based on this actual car: The Phantom Pace Car www.vintagecorsa.com/Vintage%20Times/2011/E-VT0411.pdf The car rides on a set of Toyo high speed radials, (about 200 miles since new ...and are in like new condition. The rims are Boyd (before Coddington) 16" polished aluminum wheels with the screw-less center caps. (see photos) These wheels were big bucks when Kevin bought them back in the day... over $4,000!! (Hint hint) The transaxle is a Saginaw 4 speed manual , with 4 spider gears (so I was told when I bought the car, however I do not know how to verify). Trans-axle worked fine when engine was pulled and should be good to go. Crown lowering bracket, Koni adjustable shocks all around. The braking system was completely redone and updated and sports disk brakes up front and a dual cylinder master brake cylinder with proportioning valve (see photos) . There is surface rust on disks from sitting in storage ENGINE: When I bought the car, here is what Greg stated he used in the engine build Roller Rocker head with ARP studs, TRW 30-30 Pistons w Total Seal Rings, Isky Cam, Dale harmonic Balancer, Otto Parts aluminum valve covers and oil pan, K&N air cleaners, Optima battery, MSD 6A ignition, alternator upgrade, custom dual exhaust with headers." When I bought the car it ran strong and like a champ. I drove it for a month then left the car in his car while I went on 2 weeks vacation. Upon returning, the engine performance was lacking. It smoked, lacked power, and over the next few days had one mechanical failure after another. I pulled the valve covers off and much to my surprise discovered the heads were stock smog heads NOT rocker rollers with ARP studs!! I am willing to discuss this particular issue (as well as any other issues related to this car) over the phone if you are interested. The engine was running before I removed it and is the same engine in the photo (however it is currently is out of the car). The engine and all accessories are included. I will also throw in any and all extra parts (a few crates full) from my other Corvair projects. I have a clear CA title in my name. Car was last driven and registered in 2007. . My enormous loss is your gain! I KNOW FIRST HAND HOW BUYING A CAR ONLINE & SIGHT UNSEEN CAN BE DIFFICULT.... SO, I HAVE TAKEN THE TIME TO POINT OUT THE MINOR IMPERFECTIONS AT THE RISK OF MAKING THIS CAR SEEM OF A CONDITION OF A LESS DESERVING GRADE. This car was a daily driven show car, not a trailer queen. It is a very solid foundation for an easy restification. I DO MY BEST TO ENSURE THAT NEW OWNER OF THIS CORVAIR WILL BE HAPPY WITH THEIR INVESTMENT. If you have any questions feel free to send me a message. I will answer them honestly and in a timely manner. I welcome and highly encourage viewing the car in person. If you are out of state and know someone locally who can check the car out for you, that is perfectly alright with me. FELL FREE TO CONTACT ME WITH QUESTIONS OR ISSUES RELATING TO THIS CAR I will happily provide my phone number upon request or send me your number and I will call you. I can not ship the car, buyer is responsible for pick up and or shipping. I am flexible on pickup date, and can store it a couple weeks at the most. CAR IS LOCATED IN LONG BEACH, CALIFORNIA HAPPY BIDDING AND PLEASE , BID RESPONSIBLY!!On Jun-27-11 at 21:45:15 PDT, seller added the following information: Note: I may have been misunderstood in my comment about Greg. To set the record straight, Greg at Corvair Specialties is not only a friend of mine, but is absolutely the BEST Corvair mechanic I know. He knows Corvairs inside and out, and has built or worked on many of the best Corvairs on the roads here in southern california. His work is nothing other than top notch. My issue was misrepresentation of the heads on the car at the time of sale. I did not mean to implicate any wrong doing on his behalf, I was just stating a fact. When I purchased the car, it was stated as fact that it had roller rocker heads with ARP studs. It didn't. Greg believed that it did. That is all. I apologize for any misunderstanding.
