Vehicle Detail
This 1986 Dodge Shelby GLHS (064) came to me in about 2006 as a result of a bet. A friend in SoCal (we will call him Steve) made a bet with me that a properly built GLHS could outrun (1/4 mile) a Stock 2006 Z06 Vette that I bought that summer. So Steve found the GLHS out East, and I had it shipped to SoCal to the “King of Cheap Speed, Boyd Gaebel” to work his magic. I was not really in a hurry, so over the next few years he slowly assembled the car below. Rock solid bottom end, lots of flow on the top end, a Porsche 944 intercooler was adapted, the drivetrain was beefed up, trans was rebuilt by Pat Pedroza and a Quaife was added for traction. No expense was spared, I spent over $12k on parts ( the head cost almost $3k) and labor to make this bad boy outrun the Z06…. So what happened you might ask? The Omni ran an 11.90 with drag radials with Boyd at the wheel with a ball bearing GT 30 turbo! Then the car came out to Florida where I was living. The GT 30 turbo (I still have it) was really too much for the street and I put a Super 60 on which works just great. I doubt the car has 1000 miles on it since all this was done. I have several cars and this was a novelty project for me, but I have moved from Florida to Cali and have 2 parking spaces and 4 cars. This car was built as an enthusiast car, which it is. The car could use some paint but it’s not bad. The carbon fiber application on the roof and trunk lid was professionally applied as a distraction from the aged paint. It does not have the original Koni adjustable shocks. The flimsy cover for the “trunk” is missing. The interior is a 7/10, it’s in good condition with two very small tears on driver seat. Let the bidding begin. This is a rare shelby numbered car #64, 1 of 500 modified by Shelby at his Whittier plant. Here is a list of some of the specs for this car. Engine – 2.5L +.020 bore, Venolia pistons, Speed-Pro rings, Clevite 77 bearings, Melling oil pump, Stock big rods. Balance shafts removed. Super 60 turbo with 3" down pipe & swingvalve. Head by Steve Menegon, G-casting (287) 44mm int, 36.5mm exh valves, Comp Cams #926 springs, titanium retainers, cam .530 lift 260 duration, Mopar Performance “005” head gasket. Champion RN9YC spark plugs. SMEC engine controller with custom calibration and 72 lb/hr injectors. Fuel pressure 45 psi, spark timing 12* (as stock). Brakes – Front – ’88 Dodge Caravan single bolt calipers, stock Omni GLH rotors. Rear – ’89 Dodge Shadow discs & calipers (solid rotor w/drum type parking brake) Suspension – Stock GLH springs & sway bars, Polyurethane front end bushings. The trans is re-built A555 with a Quaife LSD and chrome-moly end plate. Re-build included all new bearings, seals and a new main shaft. Axles are Saginaw type for '91 Shadow stick shift, modified with shafts from a '91 Olds Cutlass. A/C works, has custom condensor and intercooler. Car has no major rust issues. There was some surface rust on the roof but that is about it. Car has boost gauge and EGT gauge mounted on A pillar. All the above work was completed less than a 1,000 miles ago
