Vehicle Detail

You are viewing a 1968 Mercury Cougar. This Cougar looks tame, but is actually quite wild (let the puns begin)! The Cougar has a fuel injected 347 ci engine and a fast shifting automatic overdrive transmission. The body is incredible for a 40(+)-year-old model (Cougar, get it?). The interior has been updated and looks great, but needs some finishing touches. This car gets a ton of looks and lots compliments when out and about. The engine and most of its components are basically brand new with only a few thousand miles (see below for specifications). The engine starts right up and really does purr like a kitten. This is one fast car! The acceleration and throttle response are truly amazing. 347 C.I. Engine Specifications: - “Sportsman” Block (Ford Motorsport) - Forged Crank, Rods, & Pistons (Probe industries/CHP) - “Track Heat” Aluminum Heads & Intake (Trick Flow) - Stage II Cam (Trick Flow) - 1.6 Roller Rockers - 24lb Injectors (Ford Motorsport) - 70mm Throttle body (Accufab) - 76mm MAF and Pipe (C&L) The transmission was assembled by, Lentech Automatics located in Ontario, Canada (www.lentechautomatics.com). Lentech makes some darn good products and this one is no exception. Lentech offers some fully manual shifted automatics, but this tranny has the option of being manually shifted or you can put it in drive and go. The torque converter was custom built for the weight, horsepower, and gear ratio of this car and has a street/strip shifting nature. This transmission is the glue that pulls the drive train/car together! You will be amazed at how quickly and smooth the up shifts are. The transmission features an overdrive button. When O/D is activated at highway speeds, the RPMs drop by about 1,000 revs per minute. In a car with 4.10 gears and a monster engine like this, that is very important. On a short, ~75 mile, test drive the Cougar achieved approximately 20 MPG!!! How many hotrods that you know of can pull that off?! The brakes were upgraded from manual drum brakes to power disc brakes up front, the original rear drum brakes remain. This change is probably one of the best upgrades on the whole car. The Suspension was rebuilt up front with new control arms, sway bar, and springs. The steering will need to be addressed next. With this cats lowered stance, a bump-steer kit would probably be a cheap investment and very beneficial. The body is in great condition. The car had a two-year stint in Chicago, then moved to sunny California, were it resided for 20 years. It then spent 8 years in storage in Indiana before I picked it up. I have had it for 12+ years now. It only comes out from late spring to fall. You will be hard pressed to find a car like this, in need of only minor bodywork (dents, dings, surface rust, etc), let alone a Cougar. If you can’t tell from the pictures, the car will need to be painted eventually. The interior has been cleaned up with the addition of new carpet and seat covers. The seat covers are teal with black inserts. They look great and really help to break-up the teal. Also the original teal lower dash has been painted black. These changes along with brand new, custom installed, Auto Meter gauges have made a great visual impact. The headliner and dash pad need repaired/replaced and the door/quarter trim panels need to be dyed to match. Overall this is a great car that is sure to leave a smile on your face and the faces of others. It is in no way a show car, but it’s a great driver with miles of potential. There are minor issues that need to be addressed (as there are with all most older cars), but you can get in it and drive as it sits. I have to sell because I have two vehicles with two doors each and I need one “family” vehicle with four doors. Will sure miss it and hate to see it go, but I’m sure the person that gets it will truly appreciate it and have a blast!
